Visa Screen Certificate / CGFNS

Published

Visa Screen Certificate is required by all foreign nurses wishing to obtain a green card to work in the US, as well as any type of temporary work permit, such as the Nafta TN Visa for those from Canada and Mexico.

It requires that you pass either the NCLEX-RN or the CGFNS exam, as well as the series of English exams if you are not exempt from them.

The CGFNS exam is only required now in about five states, and rumor is that one or two will be removed from that remaining list as well. Do not bother with that exam if you are not going to work in a state that does not require it, or you have no way to be able to take the NCLEX exam from where you are currently located.

The application for the VSC is now only good for one year.........please do not apply for it until you have passed at least one of the required exams, or you may need to pay an additional fee.

Mainly universities are the ones that are not capped and not affected by the April filing

for the evaluation, it says we need transcripts from all the schools, what if the grades from other previous schools are already incorporated in the the Nursing program transcript, do we still need to have the other transcripts sent to CGFNS? Or is it ok to send that ONE transcript that has all other 'stuff' incorporated in it?

2nd question. if the school indicated that the method of teaching and books were in english? Does graduates from the philippines still need to take toefl for the VSC?

thanks.

For US educated nurses (F1 status)

what is the exact deadline you need to get your visa screen checked by?? Before OPT starts?

I just found out about the visa screen recently and my state (Washington) needs CES

I was wondering when to get a visa screen in relation to my NCLEX exam (which will be in mid-end of June) and my OPT (which I hope will start near August)

Thank you

Visa screen isn't required for OPT but when you have a interview for H1b, TN or immigrant visa. If you trained in the US then you shouldn't need CES as your training should already meet requirements

hi.. my other concern is should we really call IDFPR to request for a Fingerprint card or we can just send them an email? thank you sooo much =)

Please I need someone to put me through working in the US am a nurse in Nigeria thanks

Hi, just wondering if its ok to not renew my license(illinois) for 2 years then renew on the succeeding cycle? Also on the visa screen certificate, is it ok to skip a few years after expiration before renewing it? No penalties or something like that? tnx

You are aware of retrogression and the very long wait, as in several years, for a immigrant visa and that is after you find a employer willing to wait the several years

Not sure if penalties will arise if you delay renewing, guess this is something you will have to ask CGFNS. I know English exam will be required to be up to date

What about the license? Any idea?

Hello, again, Im back to allnurses.com :)

I passed NCLEX, got my Visa Screen certificate, applied for petition and it was denied. I got frustrated and left everything behind. Now I am happily married to an american national and planning to go to the States in the near future. My Visa Screen Certificate will expire in may and I need to renew it.

I was not able to find the online application for renewal. Is it the same as the initial application?

I have actually few questions, please, be patient with me, coz I am lost again!

Do I need to sit for IELTS again if I have just finished my post registration degree with Australian University?

Do I need to supply all the transcripts from high school and College if I have done it already during the initial application?

What are the fees for VSC- renewal?

I have changed my name as well after getting married, do I send them a copy of the marriage certificate directly?

I will be gratefull of your input as always! This site has been of a grate help to me, doing all the process by myself. I hope Suzanne is around too. Thanx to her and her program I passed NCLEX- 1st time!

If you are getting immigrant visa due to marriage of a US citizen you do not need visa screen certificate

Thank u! We are living outside of the USA and did not start the immigration process yet, that is why I do not like to loose my VSC. Can u, please explain how that works? I am still a foreign nurse and I will need VSC to work in the US?? California board gave me a time frame to provide a social security number which I did not, coz I was not in the US. I'm guessing they destroyed my file. That was in 2007..Thank u!
