Very Confused, Need Direction

Published

I'm currently in the Army and a Lab Tech. I have an associates degree of Health Sciences with a GPA of 3.0. The idea of becoming an RN is new to me. So I need direction. Will my health sciences degree help me get to be an RN? I was thinking of going the BSN route. My college is paid for by my MGIB. My main focus is getting my IBCLC right now. So I will be doing that first. I'm thinking of starting school for the BSN in the fall of 2015. What all do I have to do to get there? I've never taken an SAT or ACT (is that right?) I also haven't taken the Teas test. We will be getting out of the army and moving to Texas. On the boarders of San Antonio. If anyone can point me in the right direction to get my million questions answered that would be awesome. What's my question? Everything. I'm so confused.

First off pick a school!! My biggest regret was starting pre req's then going from school to school. See I also was moving to Texas. I started off at the community college & did the core (math, history etc) then nursing pre req's got close so I started them for UTHSCSA then half way decided on a different school that was closer well I realized that most of my classes didn't transfer or they didn't need them at the new school. Ughhh very frustrating & disappointed.

Most schools you don't need to take the SAT/ACT if you already have college credits.

Don't take the TEAS till u chose a school cuz some schools want the HESI instead. Plus these tests are good for only a year at some schools. As for your degree, you might have most of your sciences out of the way. But again some schools only allow science courses to be 5years old. Hope this helps. You have many options here in SA.

Good luck!!

Thank you for responding! I have the bulk of my school through George Washington University, and my other humanities type classes from Paradise Valley Community College in Arizona. I did that in highschool so it's passed 5 years now for my psychology. But it's all being wrapped up into my Health Sciences degree. I found a nursing school in San Marcos, I'm going to request more information. It seems like a good location, since we want to be close to San Antonio, but not in it. I did my OJT At BAMC for my lab tech school.

The best thing to do is to get your official transcripts and meet with the admissions advisor at the school you want to go. The will be able to tell you what credits will transfer over and what prereqs and entrance exams you will still need to take. Since every school and program is just a little bit different it is really hard to say exactly what you will need to do.

I sent an e-mail to the veterans affairs people at Texas State University in San Marcos TX. They seem very military friendly. I hope they can point me in the right direction!

Hi there! First of all - THANK YOU for your military service.

Your prospective move will put you in a very good area to continue your education. Colleges & Universities in San Antonio are extremely military / veteran friendly. Take the time to investigate BSN programs at UTHSC-SA School of Nursing (my BSN alma mater!) and University of Incarnate Word (private school with small class sizes). Talk to an admission counselor to find out where you stand in terms of pre-requisites and what type of tests they may require.

Best of luck to you.
