Hi all!
I'ved applied to VCU's 2015 accelerated BS program and now am waiting for January to come...3 months is going to go by too slowly but I'm so excited too!
I'm reaching out to any current applicants to learn about you and your background...please share! :) I'm currently an Athletic Trainer and have been working in this field for the past 11 years but have decided to take a turn in my career and become a nurse! I'm hoping my experiences will be in my favor.
Also reaching out to previous & current students to ask you your tips for success in the program. Please share anything that works for you!
Hey all,
My fingers are crossed for all the people on the waitlist. I met with LaToya today and got a tour of the nursing building by Jaclyn - one of the ambassadors. It was super nice and everybody I met today was supportive and positive about the program. I don't have enough nice things to say about my experience there. Richmond is such a cool city and the school is located right in the heart of downtown. I'm from a small town so it was definitely a lot different from what I'm used to, but Richmond isn't that big and it's pretty easy to get around.
LaToya told me the first semester is 9 weeks long. There is a one month break between the first semester (summer) and the fall semester. I wasn't expecting such a long break, but that was nice to see.
By the way, any other men accepted into the program? For some reason, my default picture is a faceless woman (I'm trying to figure out how to change) haha, but I am a male and from what I gathered today the program is about 1/4 male. We need more men in nursing.

Hey @alliegem,
You seem to the person to come to for questions pertaining to VCU's ABSN program. I decided to apply to VCU's ABSN program after hearing mixed opinions about direct-entry programs (I also heard that having a BSN prior to completion of an MSN was valued by employers). I was recently accepted into VCU's program and am curious as to whether you have any insight regarding the application process for the MSN programs at VCU. More specifically, will I have to wait a year after ABSN completion before I can start the MSN program (if accepted)? I know that some programs allow BSN students to apply to the MSN prior to BSN degree completion, but it appears that this may not be the case with VCU. Basically, I am old and the idea of having to sit out of school for a year prior to beginning the MSN, especially when I am absolutely certain of my specialty (I already have master's degree in psychology), is extremely concerning to me and may play a vital role in my decision making process. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@alliegem,
After taking a long and hard look at the VCU website, I am feeling less concerned about the year gap between ABSN completion and MSN enrollment, as the website states that the MSN can be completed in 5 semesters. My initial concern was based on the assumption that the MSN portion would take a full 2 years to complete. I am still interested in obtaining information regarding the application and admissions process for the MSN program following completion of the ABSN. Also, I see that the MSN curriculum is currently under review…any idea as to what that means? Thanks again!
Hey Morgan,
I am 99% certain that you can graduate with your BSN and go directly into your MSN without waiting (assuming the program times line up... I'm not sure what semester MSN classes begin). As far as the actual application process for MSN goes, I have no clue. I'd ask your advisor, Ms. Davis, for a contact person about that.
However, waiting a year and working at VCUHS can have some perks! If you work at VCUHS for one year and are accepted back into school, they will pay a portion of your tuition (and your spouse's, too!). I don't remember how much it is, but definitely helps with the bills.
Hope this helps some!
Allie

Thanks alliegem :) Hopefully the timing will be close to the same as last year as that is only one week to go!
