VCU CRNA DNAP 2021

Published

It's insanely early to think about this, but here's a thread for anyone applying for the VCU DNAP cohort set to begin January 2021, the application window is open! Are you studying for your GRE yet? ?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone knew if they had set dates yet for our orientation in January? Work is asking for my schedule and my wife is wondering when we can go see her family around the holidays. Just wanted to reach out here before sending an email.

Hi!! I know this is an old thread but I’m applying for the 2022 cohort and would love any advice I can get!! I started a 2022 thread but no responses yet ? Thanks in advance!!

Hey! Make sure you have all your ducks in order (classes in undergrad repeated if needed), take the ccrn, lots of hours for shadowing, and a killer letter of intent. I’ll also be applying for the 2022 cohort. I’ll look for the thread.

I'm sure you'll have more candidates who will join you in applying and join your discussion for this years application cycle, VCU just had an odd application timeline that seems to be months apart from most schools.  In terms of advice, simply: you need to demonstrate that you're a well-rounded candidate, if you have deficits in your application such as science GPA or undergrad GPA, address it directly.   VCU seems to appreciate and seek those who have a clear path and goals after graduation and what you plan to do after you graduate and start practicing as a nurse anesthetist.  Good luck!

Less than a month to go until apps are due everyone, how's it goin'? Anyone still have to tackle the GRE? ?

I intend to apply to the CRNA program for the 2023 academic year. My key concerns are 1. my GPA is on the lower end of the acceptable range, and 2. my current ICU experience will be a couple years removed from application date. Please see my current qualifications below.

Here is a list of my current statistics:

I graduated with 3.24 GPA.

I have been working as a register nurse since 2010.

I have a total of 4 years of critical care RN experience in two different hospital 2 yrs in each hospital. In addition another 4yrs of ED/ICU experience.

I am a current CCRN since 2015.

I plan on taking the GRE in January 2022.

Currently, I am working in a step down unit as a charge nurse managing pulmonary patients (for example, pre lung transplant, Endobronchial Valve, Interstitial lung disease patients).

My questions are as follows:

Considering my GPA is on the lower acceptable range, is the GRE score extremely important for a candidate with my qualifications?

Is my listed ICU experience enough to be competitive or do I need to be actively in an ICU position prior to applying for the CRNA program?

Any advice would be helpful

thank you

Hi RN2023

I definitely recommend for you to be in the ICU when you apply.

I also encourage you to reach out to VCU for a transcript review.

some schools do require the GRE with a lower GPA ( <3.3)

it also depends on what your science GPA is

Here is a great community for you to join as you start embarking on your CRNA journey

Since, I cannot message directly to Asherah, this question is for  Asherah or if anyone one’s to respond its OK too.

I see that you are very helpful in providing the feedback and guidance to the ppl on applying for CRNA school and esp u r a SRNA in VCU and that’s what I’m hoping to apply for too in 2023 but I need some hints.

I have posted a topic in VCU CRNA 2023 and if you have time could you please read and give me any suggestion on Wht I can do to better my chance or should I just completely forget abt applying?

thanx

Regarding your questions above about GPA, GRE and critical care setting, I recommend the following, and would do so for any CRNA program, actually.  Your GPA is on the lower end of acceptable, but you can augment with a competitive GRE score (> 310) and I would consider taking graduate nursing courses (Biostatistics, Research Methods) if possible.  I took my graduate courses at University of Maryland since they offer two classes as Coursework Only (without enrollment), but be prepared to pay $$$.

Yes, you absolutely need to be working in a critical care environment, this is hard stop and I wouldn’t recommend applying anywhere without recent critical care experience.  You’ll need recommendations from critical care clinicians and your best bet to do so is your work environment.  Programs would probably look at your former experience and wonder, “why isn’t this person in an ICU now?”  You could always take your chance and apply now, but I wouldn’t recommend it.  I’d take at least a year to work on one or more aspects of your application and then go for it.  I started this year and I’m 41, I wouldn’t let age deter you if that is a consideration.

Good luck!
