Hi everyone!
I wanted to start a topic for people applying to VCU's ABSN program this fall that starts Summer 2016. I've been reading the 2014 and 2015 threads and found them really helpful, especially reading other stats of students who had been accepted in the past.
I've already submitted my application, sent my SAT scores, sent my college transcript, and I'm just waiting on my references! I'm taking microbio at Emory University in Atlanta through their SON right now, and will be taking A&P 1 and 2 through their nursing school in the spring. Emory made these pre-req classes specifically for pre-health students and offers Anatomy as one class and Physiology as another to be taken together in one semester. I'm worried about taking both in the spring though and how it will look on my application though having them uncompleted currently!
I graduated from Virginia Tech in May with a degree in Business Management and currently work as a consultant. However, I've worked for a healthcare company for three years and also interned for another major children's hospital. My GPA is low... below a 3.0, which is one of my biggest fears (I hated business classes... but it was "practical"). All of the science/health classes I took are A's though. I'm also volunteering at Children's in Atlanta once a week in the ER along and their cancer center. My SAT score is 1280.
I'm also applying to Emory's program in Atlanta and thinking about applying to Bon Secour (not sure about that yet). I've also considered an associated program, but I'm worried about getting a job in Richmond with that degree!
Hoping to hear from past/current students and applicants about their stats and any advice for the application process!
Hey Jessica,
In my cohort, I can think of 2 people that I believe worked full time. One of them worked nights and would come to school for a full day of classes. This person fell asleep in class sometimes... but still graduated with us. The other one skipped some classes, still graduated with us.
While I wouldn't recommend it and while the school will strongly discourage you from doing it...it can be done. Be prepared to function on minimal sleep.
Hey everyone!!!
It's getting close to the deadline, I'm so nervous about this because it seems like such a great program! I graduated from college with a 3.01 GPA in December, but I just received an email saying they are only going to use the GPA I had when my application was originally submitted which was a 2.89. I know that's really low, but I did awesome in my pre-req classes and really turned my GPA around after I decided I was no longer interested in my previous major.
Has anyone found out if the February 15th deadline is finite- I remember reading previous cohorts found out before then!
Hello! Thought I would join the conversation as well... my name is Erin and I graduated this past Dec from VCU with a degree in criminal justice, minor in psych, and a 3.5 GPA. I work full-time and did so my entire undegrad career, so I too have a lack of healthcare experience that I'm worried about. VCU is also my number one choice, so hopefully we will be receiving decisions very soon here! Good luck to everyone!

Hi guys, I'm Jessica, I graduated from VCU in 2011 with a degree in Clinical Lab Sciences. I have been working in various labs at VCUHS for the past five years, and I am now trying to get out of the lab environment. I am anxiously awaiting my response from the school of nursing. I have a big question, are there people who work full time? I work nights currently 4 days a week(9pm-730am), and I will need to keep my job while I am in school. I have time at work to do homework and study (I took anatomy, physio, medical micro and lab last semester while working).
Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!
