Vanderbilt's Nurse Residency Program

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

Does anyone have any advice on how to make a strong letter of intent for Vanderbilt's Nurse residency program? I know they accept a lot of applicants for each cohort but I'm not sure how many people actually apply and how competetive it actually is. If there is anyone on here that is currently in the program, was previously or knows anyone who has gone through the program, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

i am also applying to the july 2010 program. i'm just curious: what tracks are you all applying to? my first choice is adult surgical. i'll be turning in my packet next week! :yeah:i'm just really excited that a program like this exists! good luck to everyone!

to those that were accepted for the january 2010 program, congratulations!! i would love to know how the first few days of your experiences are like.

My first two choices were Peds and Adult Critical Care. I'm sure that they are the most competitive, but I figured that if I'm moving all the way across the country it should be for something that I really want! From reading this forum, it looks like the interviewed people for areas that weren't their top choice in the past. We'll see! Good luck to all of you! I'm curious to know how many people have applied!

first off, congrats to those that are starting soon! :) i've applied for the july 2010 program too! i just sent in the application packet. *crossing fingers* my first choice was adult critical care, which i know is competitive, however i'll take anything! :) has everyone applying already graduated? i will be graduating may 2010 (woohooo!!:yeah:) so i'm wondering if that will affect their decision.

also, does anyone know when they start calling/emailing for the interviews? i'm super excited/nervous!! good luck everyone!!

Hi Everyone! I applied for the JULY 2010 residency program- just sent everything in last week. :yeah: I'm nervous! It sounds like a great program but it's highly competitive. Where is everyone from? I'm applying from Penn State's nursing program. I picked pediatrics as 1st choice, adult critical as 2nd! I wonder when they'll notify candidates about interviews?

This is like deja vu for me! I remember i originally started this thread back in september when i applied to the program. I started this thread because i really knew very little about the program and what to expect, and at that time i lived out of state and knew nothing about nashville. I'm glad that this thread has become such a great resource for everyone and i encourage all the new applicants for summer 2010 to use this to network as our group did.

The best advice that i can give to all of you is be very PATIENT! this is an extremely long process. You have to wait months between the time you apply, to the time they start interviews, and again until the time you start. Our group was a mixture of graduates from may and december, so as long as you graduate by the time you start that doesn't seem to be an issue. The whole process is such that what you bring to the table ( your background, academics, work experience, reccommendation letters, and interview if you are selected) will determine if you are selected or not, and it all depends on how you measure up to the other candidates. There are a LOT of people who apply to this program. You guys may benefit from going to 's website and looking at the previous nurse residency cohort groups, which will give you a feel for how many people they accept. (for example there were 200 plus interviews for our group and they selected about half).

Whatever happens, all you can do is do your best. If it is meant for you to be selected for the program, you will. And remember if you are placed on the waiting list, you are very likely to get in (the process takes so long that many people find other jobs or decide not to do it) so don't give up hope....I was on the waiting list at first and was really bummed out about it, but i got an offer like two days later. *wine

If you guys have any other questions feel free to PM me and I will be more than happy to give you the answer if i can. I know exactly what you guys are going through and I wish there had been someone there when i was applying that had already gone through the process. Good luck to all of you and hopefully i'll see some of you this summer...maybe even in my department! (i am in the critical care track)

Take care!

You will be able to send a pm after you have 15 posts. There are various ways to send private messages. In addition to what the poster above said, you can click on "My Account" in the yellow bar at the top of each page. On the drop down menu, click on "Create Message". You may also send a private message by clicking on the "User Control Panel" in the drop down menu. Then click the "Send New Message" link in the private messaging section.

For more information about Private Messages go to the What are Private Messages thread in the Frequently Asked Questions forum.

ahhh.. ok! Gotcha! Thank you Angel_RN_1 and tnbutterfly! I guess I'll have to post a few more things before I can PM someone :uhoh3:

Thanks AngelRN! How long was the time period from when the applications were due until they contacted people for interviews? Thanks and good luck this week! Let us know how it goes.

Hi Everyone! I just got an email saying they would be emailing us regarding "the next step" (I'm assuming that means possible interviews?) in mid February. That's just a few weeks away....SOO exciting! I was surprised it was so close. I didn't send in my application until January so I hope they didn't already have the group of people to interview before my application was sent. Oh well...I guess it's just a waiting game now!

Angel- it was GREAT to hear from you! I recognize your name from the last group. How are you liking the program? How was the adjustment moving to Nashville? I'll PM you!

Question - applied a week ago for regular position that has been posted since October. Can you get into their NR program from the "inside"? Or what are the odds of even getting a call on the staff job? I have 8 yrs experience/the last 3 yrs with high risk at a comparable level hospital out of the area and would love to relocate.

thanks a bunch

AA
