Vanderbilt 2020 Pre Specialty

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I am making a post for all programs I am applying for that I have not seen thus far. I have been going into rabbit holes of previous year's posts for schools I am applying for. Vanderbilt has been my top choice since I decided to go into direct entry nursing the end of my sophomore year of college, so it seems only fitting to make a post for it. I am applying for the PMNHP specialty and look forward to reading posts and getting to know everyone!

I got in for Psych and this is very very big for me! The Scholarship offer was also pretty tempting so now I’m Super grateful! It’s all narrowed down to Penn , Yale and Vanderbilt! For those in similar predicaments we can trade ideas in the Facebook group! Happy to meet you all and congratulations !!

We would love to have you here. I hope you choose Vanderbilt and if you do, I look forward to meeting you in August.

Had to just chime in because I saw something about diversity issues and as a black man who just got accepted to the psych specialty I think it’s important that we don’t shy away from these things but rather go into these spaces to effect the change we want to see in this world. Leadership has to start somewhere and it can start with us as minorities. We got this! Excited to meet and learn from you all!

I'm very excited about the possibilities for enlightenment and service that are inherent in two black men being accepted in psych. In my cohort there are two black women in psych so I hope selialy and doulaseason both choose Vanderbilt and bring insight into some health issues that the Vanderbilt community is unlikely to pay attention to without you shining a light on them.

I was waitlisted for PNP-PC. Does anyone know the chances of acceptance off the waitlist? Will it really not be until July?

Omg! Congrats on the scholarship and other acceptances! It would be awesome to add diversity to the program. I am also from a minority group and got a scholarship from . How are you making your decision between the other programs? Do you think it would be appropriate to tell them about other scholarship offers?

If they say July, you should believe that and plan on July however, I was taken off the waitlist for PMHNP in March. Biggest thing is don't lose hope but also make smart decisions if you have other offers.

Yes, I want to agree with Psych99143. I am glad to say that in the current PMHNP PreSpecialty cohort all "racial" peoples are represented--most by 2 or more of their "racial" group, except perhaps Native Americans. I think this is a pretty strong representation considering the comparative resistance to getting help from mental health professionals amongst our "racial" minority communities as compared to the U.S. "racial" majority community. We are a pretty brave group of pre-professional racial minority women in this PMHNP cohort. Let's welcome the minority men.

For anyone wondering, I sent an email asking if I'm able to find out where on the waitlist I stand, and they said they do not give that information out. Kinda strange cause I know other programs will tell you so you have an idea, but whatevs! Looks like I'll likely be heading to MGH or Northeastern, congrats to everyone accepted!!

Is anyone else here Slightly worried about the short length of the NP portion? I want to make sure I’m ready and will be a competent NP. I know no matter what program we graduate from we’ll need some training after. Any chance the previous/current students on here can speak to the quality of the clinical placements and how easy/difficult it is to find a job after? I’ve been accepted for PMHNP but any general insight is appreciated.

Someone I know graduated from the AGACNP this year and she’s been telling me she’s having a hard time finding job.

I am currently a PreSpecialty student with two mentors--one who has graduated and one who is currently in her Specialty year. Your worries are normal. I had them and this program is so different from the normal path to nursing and different from what most other programs in the country are doing. The only other program like ours that I know of is at Boston College. Vanderbilt is the only school that has been doing this for over 30 years and our PMHNP program is number 2 in the country for a reason --because our graduates pass the licensing exam first round and are strongly sought after. PMHNP students start their clinicals in fall of the Specialty year, and start getting recruited in the Spring and Summer of our Specialty year--before we have sat for the credentialing exam. With job offers from around the country, PMHNP students get offered between $90K-$140K regularly as starting salaries--you just have to be open geographically.

AGACNP is still a growing field that has not unilaterally found its footing in all hospitals across the country but produces the best of those Nurse Practitioners as well.

Although our professors like me to just leave it there: Vandy has been doing this for 30 years and doing it with superiority, I like to make this analogy: If you were going to PA school, you would be similarly trained for two years (PA programs range from 24-30 months and our Midwives and some other specialties are trained for 30 months) and then you go into the world and you are ready.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. My friend is trying to stay in Nashville (So I’m sure that’s making things harder) but she’s having a pretty hard time finding a job as an AGACNP. It seems like it might not be as big of an issue in psych.
