Hi all!
I just wanted to get a thread started for those who plan on applying to Vanderbilt's prespecialty (for non-nurses) MSN program. I only recently discovered this program about 2 months ago and am absolutely enamored with it! I plan to apply to 8 schools for this cycle, but Vanderbilt is at the very top of my list. I am looking into FNP, which has the distance option. I am not sure whether or not I would prefer to stay at Vanderbilt for the whole program, but I do like that there is the option.
Aside from finishing up micro this summer and taking the GRE in a month, I am fully ready to apply. Just need the application for 2011 to open up!
Anyone else?
Hi everyone! I have been reading through posts on allnurses for a couple of months now as I've been preparing to apply to different schools, but this is my first post! I just found the Vanderbilt pre-specialty Master's program a couple of days ago, and am planning to go ahead and try to get an application in now (I know, it's extremely last-minute!). I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion about recommendation letters- so far I will submit one from my volunteer coordinator at the hospital, one from an employer, and I'm wondering if it would be better for my third to come from a professor who I've worked with for years in a different field of study, or from my Anatomy teacher who I only had for one term??? Both would give me great recommendations, but which would look better on the application? What do y'all think?
Also, I haven't seen too many posters applying to the acute pediatrics program... any word about how competitive that one is?
Well, thanks to you all for posting, this is such a great resource for us all!
Good Luck to those still waiting to hear back, and Congrats to those who've already gotten good news!
Hi all,I attended the open house this weekend, and while Vandy has a very impressive program, it's just not the right fit for me. I'll be turing down my spot for one at Seattle U's midwifery program, so hopefully someone on the waitlist gets my spot! Best of luck to all!
I'd love to hear a little of why you feel it wasn't the right fit for you. Unfortunately, I can't pm yet....otherwise I would have asked you there. Would you mind pm'g me? TIA.
I don't think you can pm (send or receive) until you have 15 posts, but its nothing bad about the program, so I don't mind posting here. It's simply not the right fit for me. I got the feeling that the program, and Vanderbilt, as a medical facility, are really into technology and innovation and prestige. While those are fantastic things for most specialties, it just doesn't seem to apply to mine too much (midwifery)
I'm choosing Seattle because their vision is really based around social justice, service, and working with vulnerable populations, which is really what I'm all about. It's also a much smaller program, and in a city I can see myself living in. Also, Vandy is (literally) twice the cost of my other choice.
So I have nothing bad to say about the program, or the weekend. Everyone in the nursing department has been really amazing and available, and I haven't heard a single bad thing. It's just not my perfect fit, but hopefully for someone on the waitlist it is!

Bicirose, I finished my application in September and went to the open house in October. I already had my references in, but at the open house I got info that applicants could send in more than the minimum. They would only score or rubric the required three, but an extra one (especially a positive one) would certainly give the committee a deeper picture of the applicant. Best of luck!

The information that I received was only in regards to the PNP (Primary) waitlist. Sorry I don't know anything about the FNP waitlist. So example the 15 people that I was referring are on the PNP (Primary) specialty list.
Best of luck everyone!
