Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty Applicants 2014

Published

Hey everyone! I couldn't find this thread anywhere so figured that I would start one for all of us who applied to Vanderbilt's Pre-Specialty Entry program (for non-RNs) this fall. I applied for the PMHNP specialty. What about you?! :)

Thanks everybody for the info!! A lot to think about. It seems that the acute care and psych/mental health specialties are the only ones offered on campus full time for the specialty portion of the program. I love Nashville, but unfortunately my specialty (AG primary care) is offered in a block format with the expectation of driving hours to clinical sites or being a distance student and finding my own preceptor, which financially concerns me. Plus, I like to idea of settling down in Nashville and i'm worried it will be a rude awakening having to up travel a lot after the pre-specialty portion!

On a related note, does anybody know when we can expect to hear about financial aid?

selizabethk--when did u find out u were accepted? I applied to AGPC, and am still waiting. My mother didn't find out she got in until mid-march (4 yrs ago), so I'm trying not to freak out just yet. She's finishing up her DNP now at Vanderbilt.

vandygal2010 - I just found out on Friday, so don't freak out!!!!! That is so cool that your mom is in the program and can actually speak to what it is like! Are you hoping to stay in Nashville for the specialty portion (despite the distances required for commuting to clinicals)? I am looking for someone to reassure me that it can be done!

I am also 95% sure I am going to attend a school up North (where I am currently living) because I can live at home and save some money. I am sure as people finalize their decisions there will be a lot of acceptances and movement off the wait list, so I am confident we will all end up at a great school!

Has anyone made a FB group yet? If not, I'd be happy to make one so we can get to know one another a little better!

Does anyone know someone who is in the peds primary care program currently? The finding my own preceptor for specialty year is a little nerve wracking and I would love to connect with someone who has done it and can assure me it isn't as much of a nightmare as I have heard it can be (from people at other programs). I love Vandy and it is my first choice, but with the cost I don't want to get one year into the program and then feel stuck and frustrated because I cannot find a good enough preceptor for myself... And does anyone know if we have to find more than one preceptor for the block format specialty year? Thanks all!

And nkw05, I have not heard of anyone making one yet, so if you would like to.. I say go for it! (:

Looks like I need at least friend to add to the group in order to make it. So if someone wants to add me as a friend then we'll get this group rolling!

selizabethk--I live 4 hrs from Nashville, so if I get in, I will be doing my specialty year online and doing clinicals in my hometown. My mother did the whole AGPC program online, as she was a direct-entry applicant, and she didn't have any problems finding her own clinical site and preceptor. She did say that her friends that stayed at Vandy for the specialty year were driving extremely far to their clinical sites because Nashville was flooded with NP students and clinical sites were full. You could do the specialty year online as well--everyone has to come Vanderbilt for a few days each semester, but it can be done :) my mom is also doing the DNP program online, and drives to Nashville once a semester. I hope I don't get wait listed, but I guess it'd be better than getting outright rejected lol.

Hi! I also am waiting to find out if I got into the non-nurse FNP program. The waiting is awful!!! I'd love to hear a little bit about Tennessee, and specifically Nashville, if you have time. I visited Nashville this weekend, but only saw midtown, right by Vandy. It was a lot of fun, but didn't seem like the kind of place I'd like to live. Do you know of any better residential areas around Vandy?

Nkw05, I added you on Facebook!

Hi! The Sylvan Park area is really nice and is not far from Vanderbilt. It can be a bit pricey though. I live in East Nashville, just North of Downtown across the river. It's a really fun area and it can be a little easier to find something for a good price. Also look near Belmont and off of 8th Avenue South. Some of my fellow Nashvillians might be able to give you some more ideas.

Just made the group! Here's the link, I added those who requested me!
