Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Winter 2018

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello!

I am graduating in December and I have the summer off so I've begun looking at potential places that I'd like to work.

I'm thinking I'd like to do a nurse residency because I want to work in a pediatric Critical Care setting (PICU or Peds ER) and I feel like having that whole year with someone helping me and that I can ask questions without feeling like an annoying dummy.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here was looking at Vanderbilt's Nurse Residency for February 2018? I'm not from Nashville, but I'm also not too far away as I'm from North Alabama. I'd appreciate any tips about the residency or about Nashville!

Thanks

I'm from Baltimore. I saw some where that you can do a Skype interview or an in person interview. I would rather do an in person interview though.

I'm just an hour and a half to two hours away driving and I'd love to do an in person interview, but I won't even know my fall semester schedule until mid-August at the earliest because we have to wait to find out when our clinicals and preceptorship are because of how individualized it'll be. It's so frustrating because I'm someone that likes to lay out my schedule as far in advance as I can.

Nashville has tons of stuff that you can see whenever you go for your interview! They've got the Grand Ole Opry and a new wax museum at Opry Mills Mall. I'm sure you'll be able to check out some attractions and turn your little trip into a mini vacation! Plus I hear that relaxing is good for us.

any one know if the chances of getting in the winter 2018 cohort is greater than summer? and any other people out of state?

Yes it's definitely frustrating because right now we just have to wait. I think waiting is the worst part! I am in the same situation with my practicum for last semester as well. I visited Nashville last summer and I loved it!! It's the main reason I am applying! I'm hoping for an interview so it can turn into a mini vacation. That part would be awesome!

I hope that since they combined Fall and Winter it means they'll take more people. Are you also from out of state jaz4412? What area are you trying to get into?

Yes I am from out of state, NC! And it's a compact state so if I did get an offer from Vanderbilt I'm hoping that whatever process it is to transfer a license between states is simple. But, I'm also apply to several other schools out of state like MUSC's nurse residency program and one in Florida as well. I am trying to get into the Adult Acute Care (Surgery Units). I got a summer internship at an orthopedic hospital and I love post-op!

I'm hoping summer internships and CNA/Student Nurse jobs help! I have an internship on the SICU this summer, but I think my interest is more in cardiac. That's awesome you like post-op!

I'm sure any kind of hospital/clinical experience helps! That's awesome that you got an internship in the ICU. Have you submitted your application yet? I'm still waiting on my clinical references to come in and the one from the dean as well.

That's awesome! I don't liked L&D and OR, but I'm glad some people do! I work as a tech on a respiratory care unit and I'm hoping to precept in the PICU or on a pediatric unit or ICU. Hopefully all those things are taken into consideration.

I wish Alabama would join the compact licensure, but most nurses here say that AL won't because they'd lose more nurses because we are one of the lowest paying states. From my understanding of it, you can use your license for up to 90 days in a new state with the compact license but if you move you must change your primary residence to the new state and notify the BON. I'm worried that getting my ATT would take forever if I applied to TN BON from out of state but it'd probably take longer to go through AL BON then apply to TN.

No I haven't submitted yet. I am waiting to hear back from a clinical instructor and I am working on my letter of intent. I'm hoping I hear back from my instructor soon. I agree about L&D- definitely not for me, peds also isn't for me.

I think they recommend people take the NCLEX in TN because it makes it easier with getting your license. That's too bad AL isn't a compact state! If I get a job offer from VUMC then I will try and plan on taking the NCLEX in TN even though MD is a compact state. Thanks for the info on licensing!

Thanks for the invite CollegeStudent1! I won't be graduating until May 2018 so I'll have to wait and apply for the summer or fall 2018 program, but I would love to get some insight for what the application process will be like!

I read a previous post similar to this for the summer 2017 group (I think) and a few of the main points I took from it was that asked more behavioral-type questions during their interviews (What would you do if...); if your top choice unit is full but you still qualify, they will let you chose to interview for one of the remaining units, including the periop internship - which is actually a separate program; and the salary that was mentioned was in the $40k range, but they had great benefits and really nice differentials.

Hope this helps and good luck everyone!!

I just finished and submitted my application! I am from Knoxville, TN and go to TTU (graduating in December, yay). I have done clinical at before and I love it there! I'm applying for the Women's Health track (hopefully L&D)!
