For prospective applicants for the 2017 year in the program. Being as I am currently wait listed in the 2016 year due to a very late application, there is a high probability I would have to apply again come November 1st 2016 for the following year acceptance.

November 1st, 2016 is the priority application deadline for the 2017 year. All materials (GRE, official transcripts, application payment, letters of recommendation, statement of intent) must have been submitted by this date.

Letters of acceptance for August 2016 orientation and start were sent out the first week of February 2016. Wait listed recipients received their wait list offer in an around the first week of March 2016 with the caveat that seats may open well into late July.

I received an email from Vanderbilt yesterday informing that the application has been opened. However, this email states that early action date is December 1st but the website states the date is November 1st. Can anyone clarify which is correct?

U want apply by November 1st. It is early cut off date.

Has anyone heard if all specialties interview everyone? I was reading through the thread last year and some comments were talking about how not everyone gets interviewed.

When I attended the open house last year, I believe they said that only psych/mental health and nurse midwifery get interviews. Perhaps other specialities here and there, but mostly just those two relied on them.

One of my references is asking if they just have to write a letter or if Vanderbilt would ask them specific questions. Do you guys know what they send to our "Recommenders"?

It's just a typical open-ended letter. There's plenty of resources online though about how to write and format a grad school recommendation letter.

Hey all... I'm a current Pre-specialty student so if I can help answer any questions I'm happy to do so.

I will say that the school adapts their processes every year to make sure that they are serving the needs of the students at the highest levels so if you receive contradictory information call the school and get clarification.

For your own sake, please note that the non-nurses coming into the MSN program are called Pre-Specialty students and current RN's are called Direct Entry. Every school's language is a little different.

ALL Pre-Specialty students are required to be on campus during the Pre-Specialty year - and it's an entire year (3 semesters). Several of the specialties require you to remain a Nashville resident for the Specialty portion of the degree (I believe NMW and Acute Care - maybe one other). OTHER specialties may leave Nashville and complete their program through distance.

Don't count on being able to work during this program.

If their application process holds true to last year's, there is no end date by which you can apply. My roommate applied in February and got into the program. Don't WAIT, but don't panic if you don't submit by Nov 1. Application submissions may START Nov 1, but I didn't submit my application personally until the end of Nov. I also didn't submit my final transcript until just a couple of weeks before the program started. Acceptance for students who haven't completed everything is conditional - meaning you have to finish the requirements before you can formally enroll in August. So when they say submit the application even if you haven't finished everything, they mean it. Submit the application.

Not all specialties do interviews.

There are people from all different walks of life in this program. My understanding (from what I was told when I asked after being accepted) is that they are looking at you holistically. Not just your GPA and your GRE scores. Yeah, they're important minimum qualifiers, but they are also looking at who you are as a human being. Are you the kind of person they want to be out in the world as a representative of this program? Will you be a positive contributor to the class? Do you have a unique perspective or experience that may bring something different to the table compared to your classmates?

Hope that helps. If you have specific questions, lay them on me! If I can answer them I'm happy to.

Thank you very much for your post!!! How many international students in your cohort and is there any chance to get in with low GRE but high GPA?

I haven't asked what countries of origin everyone is. I also haven't asked everyone what their GRE/GPA are.

Really all I can emphasize is that they are as much interested in you for YOU as they are in your academic credentials. Remember that the numbers published are typically averages - unless you are specifically told they are minimums. Don't NOT apply because you think your scores are low. You just don't know what they may see in you.

Thank you very much!

For anyone else FNP specialty I asked if they interview all applicants

" They will conduct a phone interview if they need clarification of something in your applicant file, otherwise, No."

Hey everyone! Who all is going to the open house? I'm going to try my best to make it from NC. I've never been on campus, so I'm excited to check it out. I was wondering about how long it took for you all to get your scores back after taking the GRE? Also, what did you do to prepare for it? I was originally scheduled to take it a month ago, but I had to reschedule, and now I'm not scheduled to take it until the end of October....cutting it close, right? Hopefully it doesn't take too terribly long to get scores back. I've never been so nervous about applying like I am with applying to V.
