For prospective applicants for the 2017 year in the program. Being as I am currently wait listed in the 2016 year due to a very late application, there is a high probability I would have to apply again come November 1st 2016 for the following year acceptance.

November 1st, 2016 is the priority application deadline for the 2017 year. All materials (GRE, official transcripts, application payment, letters of recommendation, statement of intent) must have been submitted by this date.

Letters of acceptance for August 2016 orientation and start were sent out the first week of February 2016. Wait listed recipients received their wait list offer in an around the first week of March 2016 with the caveat that seats may open well into late July.

Hi there. I'm joining this thread. I was the OP of the 2016 thread, but did not like the scores I made on my GRE well enough to apply, so I'm studying up to retake and apply this Fall for next year. I went to the Open House at today and they gave lots of good information.

Hi, I'm Justin. I'm a non-nursing professional and planning on applying for 2017 for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care specialty.

I'm currently taking a GRE in-class prep course (Kaplan), which is going well. Planning to take the GRE in April, and start pre-requisites this summer, fall and next spring.

I attended yesterday's open house at and LOVED it! The highlight of my time there was Dr. Erin Rodgers! She was so engaging and entertaining!

Looking forward to an exciting few months before we apply. It will be nice to share this process with all of you!

Depending on the degree of competition within the applicant pools, be sure to work on activities that pertain to your intended degree. My GRE score wasn't great in my opinion but because I earned two undergrad and a graduate MPH where I worked on attitudinal survey research with a prominent member in the birth worker field for my MPH, had EXCELLENT references (they know my passion!) and that my statement of intent indicated that passion along with a GPA between all three degrees of 3.7, I was invited for an interview. It can be done! I also actively participate in my community with professionals and am working on state legislative/DHHS changes so that when I get back from the program, I will be able to better do what I need to do to make much needed changes in maternal-infant morbidity and mortality. Demonstrating competence and interest is key I think, especially as a pre-specialty individual. The demands of those two years must also be appreciated so be sure to look over the calendar and clinicals prior to your interview.

Good luck! I am looking forward to reading how others fair with the application and interview process!

Hi Tessa!

Make sure you don't make the same mistake I did and apply by the November deadline for early consideration otherwise you may end up on the waitlist. Good luck! Keep us posted and ask questions here if you have any as you go through the process.

Thank you! I plan on it! Do you remember for the letters of reference was it just a letter from the person or did they have to fill out a specific format on the online application. Basically would I be able to ask for letters ahead of time so I know I'll have them ready to send when the application opens.

Hi tessag12:

The letters of reference have to be professional in nature so former bosses/superiors, professors etc will provide testimony to your interest and ability to complete the program and that you show a vested interest in advancing your education. There is no specific format. They will write freely on your behalf. You can have them write it now and save it for when the time comes as I suspect they are uploading or copying and pasting the document within the online request to complete. You may want to discuss beforehand your passion and aptitude with respect to why you are choosing this school and your respective program along with any links to the program so they can better speak to your ability and interests. Good luck! Be sure to post if you have more questions and have a look at the 2015/2016 forums as there may be some answer to your questions within those sets of forums as well.

Hello, everyone.

I am planning to apply this fall to the pre-specialty PMHNP program and would like some input, as I am unsure of how I competitive I will be as an applicant. My GPA is low due to my life having been quite turbulent during the time I spent pursuing a BA in Psychology.

My GPA at a CC where I spent my first two years of undergraduate is 3.59 (was 3.78? or so upon graduation, but then I took some summer classes there during the turbulent years..)

My GPA at UT-Knoxville will be about 3.3 when I submit my application to Vanderbilt, assuming that I make A's in Physiology and Microbiology over the summer semester (I am confident of this occurring.)

My GRE scores were: 169 (99th percentile) on the verbal, 156 (64th percentile) on the quantitative, and 4.0 on the writing. I plan to retake it in August or so as I am certain that I can score higher on the writing portion (and probably the quantitative as well).

By the time I submit my application, I will have two years of experience as a full time nurse's aid/psychiatric technician (my job title is "Program Counselor") at an in-patient acute psychiatric facility.

I have minimal, and mostly unrelated, research experience. I also have a little bit of volunteer experience in mental health settings.

My low GPA is what concerns me most, but I'm hoping that good GRE scores can balance that out. Also, I am fairly confident about my ability to produce a statement of purpose and answers to the essay questions which will be at least on par with the average applicant.

Given all of this, how much of a shot do you guys think I've got?

Also, best of luck to everyone!

Hi guys! :) I'm taking the last of my pre-reqs this summer, and I'll be graduating with my bachelors in social work next spring. I haven't taken my gre yet....I was going to ask you all when the best time to take it would be...I have not started studying yet since I've been busy with my summer classes. I'm also still honestly debating whether or not to apply this cycle or to wait until next year. I had a 3.9 gpa prior to last semester, but I made my very first F in a class, and it brought me down to a 3.55 gpa. I took 19 credit hours, worked part time as a medical assistant, and was dealing with some serious health issues....I know.. I'm crazy lol. I managed to get straight As in all my classes except in chemistry 2, I just couldn't keep up with it. I'm enrolled to retake it this coming fall, and will get a grade replacement with my new grade, and hopfully bring my gpa back up. I've made straight As in all the prereqs though so far. I'll be working as a social work intern my senior year at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, in which I will be doing intakes, biopsychosocial assessments, depression/mental health screenings, and discharge planning for residents. I'm super excited! I would love to apply to the pmhnp program for non-nurses, but I am still debating if I should just apply to absn 1 year programs here in my home state, and then apply to vanderbilt pmhnp after I get my bsn. What do you guys think? Would you try for it or wait? Look forward to getting to know you all!!
