I haven't seen a thread yet for 2016 hopefuls, so I thought I'd start one. After much research and changing my mind back and forth, I decided to go for the Vanderbilt MSN. I would be direct entry as I already have my BSN. I finally decided on Pediatric Primary Care. I'm just worried about getting a job after graduation as I'm not really seeing much in the way of openings in the Nashville area--which is where I live.

Interesting. I don't see it. Just the email to go to the link where the letter is found and when I got back to the status page, it looks all the same including the screen to manage my application. Did you have to create a MyVU account? In doing a little research, there was mention of logging in after creating your account there to be able to address the wait list portion of that acceptance.
I received wait list confirmation today. I was told that you can be invited as a student up to the day of orientation. So you can be offered a spot the day orientation starts which is kind of rotten if you're on the other side of the country. One individual had three days notice I was told, showed up for orientation for the few days then traveled back across the country and packed stuff, family, kids and pet and moved in a week. It can be that short of notice and I know I don't have funds to support that kind of short term planning to move from Colorado to Tennessee. They are aware of this so usually they try to extend open seats to those who are closer. Also, there is mention in the email about a form to be filled out to confirm your wait list interest. Where is this mysterious form located?
I went to the open house on Saturday and specifically asked the Assistant Dean how many people are on the pre-specialty FNP wait list and its 30+. She said that last year there were still about 20 people on the wait list when the program began (some were offered spots and others "melted off" due to choosing another school). This news was pretty disheartening and I'm definitely not putting all my eggs in one basket after learning how many people are on the wait list (there's only 27 open seat and 30 on the wait list...). I'm looking at ABSN programs so I can then reapply to Vanderbilt next year for the MSN program as an RN. I've been accepted to a few that start in the fall so I may go with one of those to get at least 1/2 way toward my ultimate career goal!!

Hi amFNP2b:
I am glad you were able to learn about the wait list situation for your program. I wish they were a little more forthright for all programs with respect to how many are actually on the wait list. I totally understand that there is no rhyme or reason with respect to the method for which they choose off the wait list it would just be nice to know how poor (or great!) the odds are stacked in each of the pre-specialty programs. I have to wonder of the 10 or so from last year how many of those were the ones who received a seat and how many of those went with another school. Interesting!
Colorado Springs only has the community college that offers the 2-year Associate's in Nursing and it is exceptionally competitive and often with a wait list. Plus it does me no good as I have no desire of working in anything but birth center or home birth work in this state. 2 years that would be better spent at Vanderbilt efficiently using my time! That and I would be well into my 40s going the route of finishing an RN first. For you it would completely make sense given your intended specialty.
I was at yesterday's open house! I didn't hear anyone mentioning the saturation/lack of NP jobs. Did they say what specialties in particular?
It was discussed in the BSN group when the associate dean was going through her PowerPoint presentation. She was showing a PowerPoint that had job placement percentages and salaries and she said, "I bet you're wondering about this 5% that are still working as staff nurses. Those are graduates that choose to stay in Nashville and have yet to find jobs here in Nashville because the NP market is so saturated and they don't want to relocate." Something to that effect. Also it was brought up in every specialty I visited. I went to PNP-PC, PNP-AC, and WHNP presentations. I heard the word saturated 5-6 times that day. It was also said when they were talking about finding clinical sites for students.

I believe this is why they have the distance program as well. There isn't enough clinical space for all of the nursing students if they all stay in Nashville for their specialty year.
