Roll call!!
You're in for a wild ride, folks! I can't BELIEVE how fast this year has flown by - I'll be done one week from today with the RN portion of my program. So excited! And I'm so happy that y'all are excited, too. Enthusiasm will carry you a long way; when you get down and are having a hard time in this program, close your eyes and remember how thrilled you were the day you found out that you'd been admitted to VUSN and why you wanted to be here in the first place.
I actually haven't started the clinical requirements yet. I'm going to contact them to see if I can wait and do it at Vandy to save some $$, since things are really tight right now. I'm hoping just the one TB PPD will be enough--2 seems odd, never heard of anyone asking for 2 negative TB tests.
Just a thought: If you get "permission" to wait and have your health requirements done here at student health, call them ASAP to make an appointment since they will fill up FAST for August when both the grad and undergrads are getting back to campus. Last year there were many, many who had not started the clinical requirements prior to getting here and it all worked out for them so I don't foresee any problems.
Thanks mammac, I hope I can do that then. Just out of curiosity, do you know roughly how much they would charge for a physical, labs, etc.?
I don't recall the prices of the titers but I DO recall being a little ticked off that I'd spent a lot of money to have mine done after they told us the prices for these things when we were at Orientation! The difference between my paying for them (insurance did not cover them) versus having them done at Vandy was HUGE. So.
The office visit won't cost you anything; students are required to carry health insurance (if you don't have your own, they will bill you for Gallagher-Koster plan that the school works with) but the cost of office visits, basic tests that can be done in the office (urine dips, rapid strep tests, etc.) are covered by a tax on your tuition dollars. The only thing you will pay for as a student is IF you go elsewhere for care (ER, for instance) or IF you have tests done that are sent to the medical center (such as immunity titers). I recently had my annual TB test (only had one) at StuHealth and it was free for me. There could be a cost for immunizations (if you need an MMR, for instance) but I'm sure it is minimal.
One funny thing: At orientation someone from StuHealth will come speak about their services...someone from the counseling service will also come and tell y'all that the nurses make up a BIG portion of the students who request psych/counseling services! But it's free, too, if you need to go. Apparently we are a stressed-out group of people!
Awesome. Went ahead and scheduled an appointment at student health to get my physical/ titers/ TDAP/ TB test done So now I feel like I'm on top of it again! Quick question for you mammac-- did you all buy your books off-campus, or is that something we can do at a campus bookstore? I'm just a wee bit confused on that point...

I'm so happy that you'll be able to save $$$ on the exam/tests/immunizations!
You can get your books used on the internet from lots of different sites online (Amazon, Textbooks.com, etc.), in the campus bookstore, or from current students (like me) who are finishing up 1st year. You probably received a notice of how to find the email list of students selling books.
Personally I cannot recommend the bookstore option; they are overpriced (you can look at the bookstore online to check their prices) and since so many students buy their books online or rent them through online sources, the bookstore tends to under order which leaves lots of students waiting to get their books until a shipment comes in the 2nd or 3rd week of classes. Not good.
I offered to sell my books to MedVision, but she (he? sorry if I offend you; I'm not sure of your gender) doesn't want to buy the whole bundle and I'd like to divest myself of them all at once if possible. Look around and let me know if you might be interested.
Once you get to Nashville, I HIGHLY recommend going to McKay's Used Books (on Charlotte) to look for older editions of books for subsequent semesters, reference, or just because it's so much fun to go there! If you love books, make sure you have plently of time when you go there. They have all kinds of books, CDs, DVDs, and video games. Not fancy; no coffee shop! You can also sell them books when you're done with them.
Yeah I might do that-- I was going to wait to buy them on campus, since I doubt I'll have the funds to do it before the loan refunds go through on the 20th. Could you send me a PM with what your asking for them (and what books are included)? I totally understand if you need to sell them before then, but just let me know.
So are y'all getting excited? I hope you are, because you should be. Strap yourselves in and get ready for a wild ride!Finals...done! Boot camp's going on now and it makes for long days, but it's great to be able to see/do so many things now. I'll be back in NVL the week y'all are here for orientation, but I know you'll all be too busy for a get-together.
I plan to sell my books, if anyone is interested. I don't recall the rules about that on allnurses, but you can PM me if you want more info. I have the NEW edition of the Iggy text set, previous editions of all others, disks that come with all the texts, the nursing skills DVDs, and various sundries.
Moderators: Please let me know if I'm breaking any rules since it's not my intention to do so. :)
NO! we definitley need to all get together! when are you headed back to NVL C? email me if its easier!
meredith, you and I will be together in ACNP next year!
I'll be leaving NVL August 8, then will come back to NVL August 24 for orientation/first block. I have some friends who will be living here continuously and wonder if we could get a group of newbies and vets together for drinks or something that first week. Probably just depends on what everyone has going on at that point.
