Roll call!!
Ooops! I thought I was probably boring people at this point. I don't have a record of the PM, but perhaps Meredith can copy/paste it to the board?
Ay ay, cap'n!
Here it is:
Fall Semester we had lecture on Mon, Tues, Wed. We were actually off on Thursdays, which ROCKED. Skills lab on Fridays. About 1/2 way through the semester we had skills check-offs, the Wednesday class went away and we started our hospital clinicals -- mine was on Thurs/Friday. We were put into clinical groups of 6 students and we really bonded, which was nuts because we were/are a very diverse group! My understanding is that not all groups had it so good, but we really did. I have heard stories about other clinical groups who don't get along so well, but I don't put up with that nonsense - there is NO ROOM for us to be competitive with each other. I have no problem just telling people exactly that.
Spring Semester we had lecture again on Mon, Tues with clinicals/conference and then Community Health on Wed, Thurs, or Fri.
Summer Semester has just been so fast and much more unpredictable as to schedule -- lecture Mon, Tues...and maybe other days...it's safe just to say that Vandy owns your time all summer semester! But it goes by like lightning.
We've had some great instructors who are very encouraging and inspiring, some not quite so much. I have heard of only one incident where a clinical instructor made an a** of herself by being mean to a student at a clinical site, but I didn't witness that so I'm thinking it may have been blown way out of proportion by the time I heard about it.
About driving 2 hours to clinical sites...it's possible. VUSN considers 2 hours from Vandy to be "local" and they do not normally accept requests for 1st year students to go where they want. I have heard that students with children/childcare issues can appeal to be placed at a site close to home or daycare. I'm from a small town and to me the traffic is horrible, but that's all relative. My apartment's not great, but the location is.
It's exciting. And exhausting. Sometimes it's terrifying and sometimes you feel like you could conquer the world! I don't even know you and I'm excited for you.
So, program materials for orientation are up! The cruel joke is, I still can't activate my VU account (I've contacted them already about this), and you need your login and password to access these documents If any of you happen to open the pre-specialty stuff, could you send it to me in a PM? That would be awesome
Hey, y'all! Just finished final exams and getting ready to start boot camp this weekend. YIPPEE!
Books...far be it from me to say that any of my fellow students are slackers! Looking at my book shelves right now, I would say you NEED to have access to the following:
*please keep in mind that, as with all things, you mileage may vary!
N235
Ignatavicius/Workman are great resources to flesh out lectures, the pics are helpful. The old edition is fine. The "virtual clinical excursion" is still in the plastic wrap...never used it or a workbook.
Varcarolis for psych is very useful. I needed it for both HEHI lectures and for my psych clinical rotation in 2nd semester for writing care plans.
Hockenberry I did not use a lot, honestly.
N245
Potter and Perry - especially useful for those who had no nursing or medical background whatsoever. Lots of basic basics. You need the videos OR you will spend time in the FNIC (Frist Nursing Informatics Center) watching them on their schedule. I liked having them to watch at home on the computer.
Kee - there are assignments due from this math book for each rotation. You'll either need the book or access to someone else's so you can work the problems and turn them in.
Nursing Dx book - you need something, since nursing diagnoses are a new language (and a foreign one!) for most of us! I'm not sure one is better than another; personal choice. They don't change much from year to year and any updates are available online.
N255
You need Lehne. Period. We've been advised to keep ours for 2nd year, in fact.
N 215
Chitty - quizzes come directly from the readings in this book. You need it or access to someone else's if you want to share.
N 225
Don't buy a HP 2010 book; you can order the whole deal online for, like a dollar or two. Go to the website and order that.
Edelman - I only recall using this book a few times. Most of the research was online.
Keep in mind you will use all EXCEPT N215, N225 for other courses during semesters 2 & 3.
Hope that helps. I'm just going through my notes and books today to see what I can divest myself of prior to moving in a couple of weeks.
So are y'all getting excited? I hope you are, because you should be. Strap yourselves in and get ready for a wild ride!
Finals...done! Boot camp's going on now and it makes for long days, but it's great to be able to see/do so many things now. I'll be back in NVL the week y'all are here for orientation, but I know you'll all be too busy for a get-together.
I plan to sell my books, if anyone is interested. I don't recall the rules about that on allnurses, but you can PM me if you want more info. I have the NEW edition of the Iggy text set, previous editions of all others, disks that come with all the texts, the nursing skills DVDs, and various sundries.
Moderators: Please let me know if I'm breaking any rules since it's not my intention to do so. :)
YES!!! Super excited!!! I am currently researching the prices for our textbooks and comparing them with what current student students are selling them for. Potter is INSANE!! Prices range from $355-$1003.....does that sound about right?
I should probably IM you so the others on the thread don't get annoyed! Lol. Sorry guys!!!
Meredith,
I'm sooo excited I can barely contain myself. I think we are in for a whirl wind! I'm finishing up the clinical requirements and getting my books. Did you guys get 2 TB tests 2 weeks apart even if the 1st 1 was negative? I just looked back over that stuff and realized I only got 1.

Ooo I just thought of one more question! I've heard that it may not be neccessary to purchase all books listed for our 1st yr courses and the most important information needed is provided in the ppt presentations or can be found online. Is that true or was I talking to a slacker? Lol! If you can do without a few, which ones do you consider mandatory? Thanks
