VA New Grad Residency 2015

U.S.A. Washington DC

Published

Hi there! I was accepted into the new grad RN residency at the VA Washington DC, set to start late August/early September. I am interested in connecting with those that have also been accepted or are currently in their 1 year program. Please say hello! Would love to hear about your experiences and backgrounds! :):):)

Hopefully we'll both hear something soon.

She was not happy that I hadn't gotten my physical yet. Had to explain that HR was giving me the run-around. She set everything up in 30 minutes, and said if I had anymore trouble to not hesitate to contact her. *pheww* Things are finally moving!

How are things going now that your physical has been scheduled?

Hi! So was able to get my physical last Wednesday.. for some reason they were transferring my documents to TX VA, so got that squared away on Monday to make sure everything is going to DC. The office said that my physical should clear by this Friday. So I'm hoping to get the official acceptance soon after this friday. I understand that the job posting said no relocation expenses given, but do you know if the VA would offer it? I understand you live pretty far, and there is another person coming from CO as well.

Also, I havent been to DC in years. How do you feel about living in/around the area?

I finally got my official offer today. It was definitely a long process. I figured they weren't helping with relocation expenses since it is the government so I didn't count on that. I'm coming from PA so it's not that far so I may leave some things here. I have been looking into apartments in and around DC but since I'm not familiar with the area, I don't know how to grade one place against another. I have heard people who work in DC living in MD or VA. Have you been looking?

Congrats! I got an email saying they are waiting for my drug screen to clear, thing is I never had a drug screen ordered, did you? I only had titers drawn. I am waiting for a call-back from Ms. D to confirm, I am really worried now. She said I should be there by 09/20, so I am guessing the start date is that week. Did you get any new information about the start date in your official acceptance letter? I am planning to stay with a family member in VA until I find a place of my own.

My drug test was a urine test but they can do it by blood too. When i got my test done, she said the results only take a couple of days to come back, so I would call in a couple of days to recheck. Official start date is the 21st. I haven't found a place yet either so I guess I will be doing the extended hotel stay until I find something. You are so lucky to have someone to stay with!

I have not been able to contact Ms. D about my drug screen, so I just called the VA where I am and set it up myself. My appointment is Friday. This is a mess on my end. It would have been nice to have had a checklist, cause I had no idea I was missing this! I really hope everything clears for me by the start date, because I am packing my stuff and heading east next Thursday:dead:; I have a 40-hr car ride. I was looking at extended stay places around the area, and boy.. they are quite expensive. I hope you are able to find a nice place in a nice location until a more permanent solution comes up!

I hope so too. You are right about the extended stay places. They are expensive!! I'm just looking into a hotel or something until I actually get there and can start looking at places. I'll figure something out. Does anybody actually know any details about orientation. I was just told about the two days for new employees.

I haven't been told anything. Ms. D told me to keep in touch with her, but my drug screen still hasn't cleared. If we HAVE to start Monday, I don't think I will make it even if I get my official letter by tomorrow. I don't know if I can drive non-stop for that long, as I am coming from CA. I hear there is a 6-week orientation, then after we would have our own patient load. Hopefully they can accommodate a late arrival, because I feel like I would get my official letter next week, which would run into the orientation period :(. Did they already tell you where/when to meet Monday?

Specializes in Critical Care.

Just Monday and Tuesday. They didn't mention anything beyond that. I hope everything works out. I feel though that they probably have multiple starting times within the next couple months. As long as they start me with one or two patients, I think it will be fine.

Hey! I emailed Ms. D and HR, and she told me to not freak out that I wasn't starting with everyone. She said they are checking daily for my results, and will call me about my start date. May I ask how everything is going? Is there 7 of you guys? What unit are you on? Do you feel like it is a good program?

Is the New Grad Residency program posted on USAjobs or is there a another website to apply? I don't graduate until next August but just wanted to inquire. Thanks and good luck to you all!
