VA/Govt Nurse Satisfaction

I would like to hear from VA nurses or US govt nurses. Do you like your jobs, pay and benefits? Two of my friends worked for the VA Dallas hospital and they reported the med surg/ ICU staffing was dangerous! Is that the case in your facility? Is your retirement based on the FERES system? (ie part Social Security, part 401K type matching, and small retirement supplement? How is your OWN health care;it looks like stingy HMO care, unless you pay extra? Full retirement after 20 years? Would be interesting in hearing the pluses and gripes/frustrations before I consider VA/govt hospital based work.

the intensity of the physical must be a regional thing. I remember taking one, but it was certainly no big deal. I think I had an ekg but did not need a CXR, because the TB test did not convert.

My physical was no problem at all. Blood, drug, and TB tests were about it for me. Also, a basic eye exam and hearing test. They asked for a detailed health history, but I didn't think it was a big deal. I think it all depends on the healthcare provider doing the assessment. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys and gals. I will let you know if I flunk or pass! If I flunk I guess it was meant to be, but I have a couple of other jobs lined up. I would REALLY like that 26 days of vacation though!

Well, to follow up..........I am now in nursing orientation, but I still don't know if I have passed the physical! The physical was pretty thorough - labs, xrays, EKG and I had to get a note from my own doctor stating I was OK to work in a hospital setting. I should find out Tuesday whether I passed or not. If not, the government owes me one week's pay though. :lol2:

As a Nam Vet, I have been in a few VA hospital in my time, some are bad and then some are great. The bad ones are that way cause most of the people that work there don't have the love for there job, just there to get a check. Then all these office personnel are working everyday to keep there job and that they don't care as well.

The hospital I go to are union and that is one of the major problems here. The union don't do nothing but take the money and will not support the employees. Then you will fine the DON etc, if you are not in there click then you no body, and they to fight each day to keep there job. So over all folks, the Va's can be a great place to work, but take my advice and really do your home work on the VA be for you get hired, being there as a patient and employed, if you like to no more info on the VA I am talking about and tell you more fell free to email me and I will do what I can.

I can tell you the best VA to work at here in NC if you like, I work there and have being a Patient.

You should definitely call the HR/nurse recruiter at the location you're interested working at. That's how I found out there were new grad
RN
openings - which are STILL not posted online. I'm sure that the pay is probably better than at your community hospitals, plus the benefits alone are great. Good luck!

Anyone have any info on working for the VA in MO? I've been offered a position and I'd appreciate the info on any of the MO VA hospitals. May start in St. Louis, but may need to move to Columbia.

I know this is an older thread- but does anyone know if the VA hospital in Manhattan is one of the 'good' VAs or a 'bad' one?

Also if someone has been treated for depression in the past, will that affect them getting hired in any way?

I think I may need treatment, but I was warned in the past that having that on my record can affect my future employment choices.

If you are not requesting accommodation and can perform your job safely, I don't see why you would need to tell your employer. With disclosure, be prepared for probing into your medical records. However, here are sites that might help you with the decision:

Disclosing your disability to your employer.

How does the federal government define disability?
