My boyfriend is planning on moving to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. I will probably join him.
I have my associates in nursing, and next year will go for BSN.
Does the UW hospitals hire only/mostly BSN nurses?
If you work with the hospitals, will they help pay for tuition at UW?
Do you like the UW hospitals?
Thanks for your answers.

Hello!
I am an RN at UW Hospital now. I have my BSN. Although they prefer BSN, they definately hire ADN's as well. As far as tuition reimbursement, they pay up to a certain amount per year, I think it is 5000 a year, but I am not certain. That, and the other benefits (which are awesome) don't kick in for 6 months, though.
I really like it there. I think there is a lot of support for nurses and in general, it is pro-nursing. It is a teaching hospital, which would be a big change if you are from a smaller, community hospital.
Well, that's my two cents! Hope it helps.

I'm a graduate of an ADN program as well, and I had applied for a position at UW Hospital. I was told by the nurse recruiter that there are two ways to be hired at the UW--one way is to enroll in their program (not sure exactly what this means) which only takes place in June; the other way is to have at least one year of experience as an RN...since I had applied a few weeks ago, and also since I just became an RN, I was not qualified for a position...she told me that once I have at least one full year of experience, that I was welcome to apply again...I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but I thought I would let you know, just in case they tell you the same thing...good luck with your job search :icon_hug:

Thank you both! This has been EXTREMELY informative.
I will not go without a year's experience first!

I did research in a lab at UW Hospitals and Clinics (UWHC) and also did my clinical laboratory rotations there while in school. It is a great place! From what I hear the tuition reimbursement is very generous (they do it by credits instead of $) although rumor is that the contracts are in the process of being renegotiated.
Meriter and St. Mary's are also very close to the university, and are community hospitals as opposed to UW Hospital which is a Level I trauma center and tertiary care hospital.
I don't know your specialty, but just so you know there is no L&D department at UWHC. The birthing center at Meriter is pretty big, and has a good reputation from what I've heard.
