UW BSN program 2015

U.S.A. Washington

Hey guys !

I'm applying and I'm really nervous, but excited to start my nursing program soon. Anyone else applying to UW?

I did get asked to write a proctored essay, I remember writing my personal essay to, and it SERIOUSLY took me months to come to a conclusion that I just needed to turn it in. For your personal essay they want to see you can juggle a lot, and that you are very independent. Also diversity is HUGE at UW so if you have anything to touch on diversity in your personal essay I definetely would. And Bubbly 33, you never know, every year they are looking for something different, but I do know clinical hours in the healthcare setting are super important and a letter of recomendation from an RN is huge. If for some crazy reason you dont get in to a school this year, which I am sure you will, I would get TONS of hours next year to add to your resume. Not only your resume tho, I seriously feel so blessed to have had clinical experience prior to nursing school because it has made my clinicals a cake walk. Overall I like the program, its been really hard for me but I hear other people say it has been really easy. Each to their own. I think at any program there will always be pros and cons. GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for all your insight landij! I just turned in my application in person yesterday, and feel confident I tried everything in my power to get into UW's program. I hope all the hard work paid off :)

Bubbly33, like stated before, I think you never know unless you really try. Maybe your personal essay is what gets you in. If not, I'm sure you'll get into SPU ;)

Good luck to everyone!

I will be mailing my paper application in the morning. It took me 60+ seconds to hit the send button for the electronic version... hahaha. I think I've checked and re-checked my application a million times. Good luck to everyone!

Just graduated this past June from the BSN program! 😜

Absolutely the best place to grow into a nurse .

I love being a nurse; didn't know much about it before I started the program.

Congratulations bsnprg, how exciting! I always hear great things about their program. Any words of advice for soon to be nursing students? :)

Best wishes with your applications everyone! I'm in Landj cohort. Just make sure you follow the instructions to a T! Can't wait to hear good news from you guys!

Just to get an idea of recent applicants that were accepted hopefulBE, maybe you could tell us what got you into UW? It's too late for me to change anything in my packet, but it would be nice to hear some profiles of current students!

Wish you guys all the best!

The workload at UW SoN is really challenging and the wonderful peeps working behind the scenes do their best to accept applicants who can pull it off.

Also keep in mind that there is only a limited number of seats available and not everyone will get accepted to the program.

At the time I applied for UW SoN, I was in another major related to families and communities here at UW (GPA 3.9), I was shadowing a RN at a SNF (100 hrs, that nurse wrote the recommendation letter for me), volunteering at VMMC concierge cart (175hrs), internship with AmeriCorps program through UW college of Education (year long commitment), Childcare Provider through WA State Department of Early Learning ( although I wasn't providing care to any children at that time, obtaining this license can be an extensive process), all my health related cards were up to date, and I was waiting tables at night in a small restaurant in the AVE.

Again, our cohort was some of the best hard working individuals I have met and everyone had something different to offer.

I personally completed the application to the best of my knowledge and made sure there is not a single phrase missing from my packet. I am the first in my family to step into the healthcare field and I did not have any friends or relatives who were nurses; I read everything that there is on UW SoN site and got a really solid grasp of what is expected of me .

My advise for prospective nursing students are not to wait till you get your acceptance letters; try to get your certification in nursing assistant program, get a CNA job in any facility that you thing best fits your needs. Get as much hands on experience as you can. Keep volunteering, shadow a nurse and build rapport with as many health care providers as you can. This will help later in the road when you need a nurse tech job or even a RN residency post graduation.

Don't give up, apply again this coming fall and in the meantime gain as much healthcare experience. As you can.

Again best wishes to all of you, work hard, we need you guys!

Thank you for those wonderful words of encouragement bsnprg!

Hard work will get you anywhere as long as you don't' give up. I volunteered in the NICU at a Children's Hospital; where I spent my time with the nurses there, I participated in City Fruit and am an ongoing volunteer at the Discovery Shop (part of the American Cancer Society). All while devoting the remainder of my time to my wonderful son and caring for my dad who is quadriplegic.

Hope that proves I can tackle a workload! I hope they give me the opportunity to prove what I have to offer. Thanks again :)

Wanted to wish you all good luck!!! I submitted my application last week and I seriously felt like I spent months perfecting every word on my resume and personal essay. I must say that I am nervous about the proctored essay as it took me weeks to write my personal essay! Any tips to the individuals who wrote the proctored essay and got in?? Also, is it true that there is a handful of applicants (~5-20) who get acceptance letters without having to write the proctored essay??

Again good luck everyone!!!

...and now we wait...

It is true that a small number of applicants are accepted w/out writing the proctored essay.

You'll have 3-4 Chem/math conversion problems and three essay question that you have the choice to pick one and write a two page essay.

You'll be given two sheets of scratch paper and you can bring your own pen.

Essay questions are all open ended and if you have any healthcare experience, you will probably have a lot to talk about.

Be honest when you are writing your essay and do your best.

I remember, I chose the question about an elder adult who was abused by his son at home, admitted with many bruises and injuries because of that incident and as a nurse I was suppose to call the police and make a report.

The question asked to write about my strength and weakness when it comes to working with this patient. I wrote about providing social emotional support for the patient as one of the areas of my strength and I wrote about contacting the police department and being in close contact with the criminal system as a weakness since as a nurse I might not routinely get to be involved with criminal law system.

You guys are not nurses and might not give the right answers, but have a logical thought process and show how much you care to be a nurse.

Be early, calm down, have your coffee hot and ready ! 😉
