UTMB Spring 2018

Published

Hello everyone! I plan on applying to UTMB for Spring 2018 entry and can't find a post on it, so I decided to make one! I am taking my TEAS end of April. I already have a degree from the University of Houston in Health Communication and minor in Nutrition. I am finishing my last two prerequisites (A&P2, Microbiology) right now at a community college. Anyone else looking to apply? Deadline is coming up next month, so I thought it would be awesome to get a group thread going! Would love to hear from others applying!

rejection dont happen till the end of the reviewing i would think. as for your TEAS 78% isnt bad by any case i got an 81% on it well 82% if they round but make sure you dont get a lower grade, when they look at the TEAS i know the amount of retakes is put into consideration. Once you get an interview just explain what occurred but i also say show the positives over the negatives. Once again ill be letting this thread know how mine goes tomorrow so any questions can be given to me or the others like denjam and charlea who have already interviewed.

thank you so much! Glad that everyone in this forum is so kind and helpful. I hope we all make it.

Does anyone know how retakes work? I submitted my app 5/29/17 and I had a C in anatomy. I just retook it the first summer term and got a B. I sent my new grade to NCAS and UTMB, but haven't gotten word that they have received it.

Anyone know how it factors into my app? What happens if they've already decided to reject me before they see my grade?

Thanks!

I feel like everyone here has perfect grades so idk if I will get an answer for this...

This is just a guess but I don't think it will. That's what the deadline is for. I don't think your app will be adjusted according to your summer semester.

That said, I think depending on where you got that C, it might be not a deal breaker. A C from a community college is different than a C from a university.

That's what I was thinking but when I applied on NCAS asked me what classes I was in the progress of taking and I filled that section out... you make a good point about the deadline. I think I will try to contact them again soon.

Hi hop3fulnurse! I agree with onthepath about calling admissions. I am unsure of how things like you are asking work exactly, and I do not want to give you incorrect information. I second the "keep your head up"! Let your strengths shine through, and just be you.

It doesn't mean that you are not a good student if you are not an A student. I think that writing a strong personal statement can make a difference and make you stand out. Don't get down on yourself! You seem to care about your grades and are working hard. That comes through on your post, and I assume it would come through in your statement as well.

I meant it when I said we are all in this together! I am happy to help in any way that I can.

Yep. I filled out for my summer classes also. But I didn't bother to update. What's in is in. I agree with calling. Only UTMB can give you accurate current info.

Everyone, regarding updating transcripts via NursingCAS. I submitted my application before completing the spring semester (ANP II & Nutrition). I sent updated transcripts to NursingCAS after completion and they verified my spring classes. It is my understanding, from what was said at the open house session, that UTMB can see the updates that we have made via NursingCAS. You could always give UTMB a call to verify this information. I do recommend updating your application with any classes that you have completed since application submission. I do believe that once you are accepted to UTMB, that you would then send any updates directly to UTMB.

Thank you guys so much! I have been a little down because I fell off path a little. All of my friends are starting UTMB Fall 17, and I had to retake a few courses due to some things happening and not doing as well as I could've. It's hard falling behind, but I really am grateful for this forum!

I understand your frustration. When I start feeling like that, I try to remind myself that this is the way it is supposed to be and that there is some reason for it. Keep us posted on how you are doing!

How did your interview go today Onthepath91???!!!!

Just got done with my interview about 2 hrs ago, very informative time and awesome learning more about the faculty and the school itself. My interview lasted about an hr and some change. Time flies i guess when you get into interesting subjects. For the future interviewees take the advice from what everyone who has done theirs already says just relax and the rest of it will take care of its self. Also remember to smile alot :)

Same. I really screwed up in college when I went the first time and am trying to correct a bad GPA. It's frustrating and I feel so inadequate. Try not to compare yourself to others. It'll just rob you of your joy.

To give you some hope since you seem worried about falling off hurting youI, I'll try to give you some peace of mind. I have been accepted and will start this fall. I had a 3.51 GPA overall (my college career spans 20 years), I took the TEAS and scored a 76 the first time but retook it and scored an 80, I have no work experience in the medical field, I am not bilingual, I had Bs in some science classes, I had a C in sociology I had to retake and pulled an A the second time, and I did have multiple withdrawals. The point is I'm an average candidate and I still got in. How did this happen when some people had better TEAS scores and grades than I did? When I inquired about this there were several factors that worked to my advantage. My interview was fantastic. I went in confident in my potential and had practiced interviewing with co-workers and family for about a week or so prior to my interview based on interview questions others had said they were asked on these boards. So how did I even get an interview with stats like mine? I was told I had a great personal statement that was uniquely written. I opted to write mine in a narrative story instead of "Hi, my name is Julie and I want to be a nurse. I'll be a great nurse because x,y, and z." Other things to my advantage were that I have a bachelor's degree and graduate degrees in education. Nursing is a LOT of teaching and teaching is also a public servant job just like nursing is. I also had a solid employment record having taught middle school math and science for the last 10 years. Being an older student (I'm 36) gave me life experience and I discussed those life experiences in my interview and personal statements to give me something that separated me. Hopefully this is encouraging to you. I had a few negative comments when I was accepted and others who had better academic records but to me it says that UTMB is true to their word when they say they consider candidates holistically and I appreciated how long the process took because I knew they were taking their time choosing who they truly feel is the best candidates for the program. Also, if you don't get an interview for the program reapply! Persistence pays off! Houston also has the advantage of several wonderful nursing programs. UT Health, Texas Women's, Texas A&M Prarie View, San Jac and Alvin all have top notch RN programs so consider applying to multiple programs.
