Howdy! I couldn't find a thread for Spring 2016, so I figured I would start my own. I'm having trouble with this whole application thing (mostly stress!), so I would love to talk to others going through this same process!
Well we didn't get denied this week. And we haven't been waitlisted. So maybe we will get lucky with some good news. I don't understand why it is taking so much longer than they said, and I really wish we would hear today, but I won't hold my breath. I think my stats are good. Overall my GPA isn't as good as others, but it's because I have close to 200 college credits. I have 2 associates degrees, and I double majored in Accounting and Finance, graduated Cum Laude with a 3.8, and I am a Certified Public Accountant. I have a lot of professional management/leadership experience with large international companies. My overall GPA is 3.23 because when I started college I was struggling living on my own and just trying to knock out classes. Once I got on my feet I had all A's. I want a career change because life as a Controller is very demanding and time consuming - lots of overtime, and I don't get personal satisfaction because I am really just a show horse lol, making the company look good and making them money, but I'm not actually helping anyone or doing good for the world. When I first started college I was pre-med for 2 years before changing course to business school. On my TEAS overall I made an 87. Math-100, Reading-91, English-93, and Science-73. I literally had to re-teach myself the entire science section because it's been 5-10 years since I've taken those pre-req's. Overall I felt like I was a competitive applicant considering my experience, certifications and education, and TEAS scores. I'm sure I'm not their typical applicant though. Who knows what they will decide. I don't want to feel like a reject but this wait is killing me. I haven't checked my email so much in my life!
Whoa! Those are impressive stats. Double major, CPA, education, scores, etc. So you worked as a cpa?
Thank you! :) Yes, I worked in public accounting for 5 years, left as a supervisor to go corporate, where I ended up as a controller for a very large international real estate development/investment/management company (Hines - they build many of the high rises you see in all major downtown areas around the world, including Houston). I have excellent work experience and am probably over-educated already lol, but I really want to become a nurse practitioner. And I'll keep my CPA because I worked really hard to get that!
I think the school is fairly well organized but I am biased cuz I got accepted back in July. But I also feared that my old bachelors with 3.4 GPA was going to drag down the overall GPA. I have 4.0 on all my nursing pre-reqs. I dont think it happened. This is a career change for me also. They did not seem to view that as a disadvantage. On the contrary, during the interview, I explained how my experiences can benefit my nursing career. I am also thinking about a nurse practitioner route in the future and the commenter with CPA skills can really be awesome at running her own clinic efficiently! If you are waitlisted, hang in there. Keep in mind that many spaces will probably free up because UTMB was not everyone's first choice at least because of commute from Houston. I am still waiting to hear from another school because I would prefer not to move from Houston.
Never thought of the GPA as the ultimate factor for success, primarily because
1) you have students who made it through college picking the easy professors (ratemyprofessor.com) who tell you whats exactly on their tests.
2)you have students who get previous exams passed down from the previous semesters' students, these exams resemble the tests.
3) you have students who get stuck with professors who are really picky, have a communication/cultural problem, or play favoritism and just don't want to give you the grade you earned (trust me there are professors like this).
I'm not saying that there aren't people who worked their butt off and got high grades, nor am I saying that the lazy ones deserve high grades. I'm saying that from what I've seen, not all grades obtained have been so in a fair manner. Some take the easy route and some have it hard, it's unfair and their GPAs are not a true reflection of it.
Admissions committees don't just look at GPAs alone, and that's a good thing.

I agree. I have visited a few schools. They all have rude staff, waiting times, difficult process in some way, etc. Overall I really enjoyed UTMB itself and what it has to offer after all the paperwork. This is also a second degree, career change for me. Not all schools do an essay and interview. I felt like with UTMB I got to be more than just grades on paper bc I didn't have the highest overall gpa from my 1st degree but my nursing prereqs and overall gpa since I've gone back has improved. Look forward to meeting those starting in January. Hang in there to those still waiting. I'm a firm believer in things happen for a reason. Things will work out just how they are supposed to for us all!
I just got off the phone with admissions and they said I was one of 20 applicants that still have not even been reviewed, maybe they meant reviewed again for waitlisting but it sounded like my app had not been looked at period since the interview. There's still hope for a few of us! We should all know by next week!

I'm in a similar situation to you @missbrown2, I have a degree already and my gpa from that is unfortunately coming back to haunt me. Since then I have a 3.87 GPA but the cumulative is what is killing my chances unfortunately. I did well on my TEAS and the lady I interviewed with said she really liked me and was going right after the interview to recommend me. I hope she really did! Crossing my fingers for all of us!
