UTHSCSA Spring 2011 Hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

hello all,

guess i'll get our thread started. i've watched these over the last few semesters, and it's a great way to share information and get to know each other.

i applied earlier this month, and got an e-mail this evening letting me know that i am eligible regarding my prerequisites. i was surprised to get something back so quickly since the deadline is july 1. anyway, that's the first step in the process...a long, long process. :) hopefully, there will be plenty of us on here to keep each other company.

look forward to getting through this process with you.

i put together the list of books in a little bit different format to help with shopping. i went ahead and priced the books through the school bookstore online and also checked amazon. there are a couple of extra columns for your own comparison shopping. hope it helps. if you see any errors or have anything to contribute, let me know. sorry i couldn't post it in editable spreadsheet format...it would only let me do .pdf. if you want a spreadsheet copy, send me a private message, and i can e-mail it to you.

i for one will have to wait for my loans to come in before i can start buying. anyway...happy shopping. :)

Thank you for your hard work. I am with you in that I can not purchase anything til I get my loans and such in. I believe our disbursement date is Jan 3, which leaves us a few days before we can pick up text books and almost nil chance of getting used books. The main problem with Amazon is that the books may arrive late.

Thanks Keili! I just was starting a spread sheet, but I was goin to look through the feed to see if I missed anything on the books.. so thanks for saving me some time!

Just make sure you leave on plenty of time to spare because once the shuttle bus comes its gone. I've seen many students being left at Lot 17 because so many people were trying to climb into the bus that passed right before class. I know you might not feel right leaving your child earlier but you might need to. I know I have had to leave earlier to school and arrive later on during the day.

Some of my friends hold part-time jobs during the weekends so that they can get a little income into the household. It all depends on how you are going to be able to handle all the work load and working at the same time.

For books, I saved about half the amount by purchasing on amazon, craigslist, ebay, and halfprice.com. I used my credit cards and then when my loans came through 2-3weeks later I just paid if off.

something to keep in mind. i know that they are going to electronic textbooks in the fall. i asked if we would be able to do the same, and we will have that option. not sure exactly how it will work, but i would really like to not have to lug books around.

while checking things out on amazon.com, i noticed that they have an amazon student membership that includes free prime shipping for one year. prime shipping is two day shipping, so you get your stuff pretty quick. this will come in handy not only for books, but also for your holiday shopping. :yeah: very nice!

sorry guys...i'm a dork, i know, but fundamentals of nursing is on amazon.com for $52.98 shipped. this is half the price of the bookstore. you might want to jump on this one if you can.

A few of the books on the list are even 20-10 bucks cheaper on half.com.. Also, at Barnes and Noble they have good prices as well..Amazon.com type prices..

not sure if anyone else has found it, but i was poking around, and i found that i could set up direct deposit for financial aid. it's toward the bottom of the page when you log into the account page. maybe it's just me, but i never really noticed it before. sure will make it easier to get that money after tuition and fees are paid. :)

which account page are you talking about keili? inside.uthscsa?

yes. under student administration, self service, then student center. it is under the finances heading.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! This year I am thankful for my loving and supportive family and for the awesome challenge and opportunity ahead. We will pray that you all have a safe and wonderful holiday.
