UTHSC Traditional BSN Spring 2014 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I have seen many threads for previous applicants for past semesters to the UT Houston School of Nursing. I wanted to start one myself as I am applying for the spring 2014 traditional BSN and have yet to find a thread for it. Although I opened it for applicants, I would also encourage previous applicants, current/previous students, and applicants for other semesters at UTHSC to join in and share in this exciting time!

For the HESI, you only need Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Grammar, Anatomy and Physiology, Critical Thinking, Learning Styles and Personality Styles.

When you sit down to take it, all of the sections are listed on the computer. They don't put only the sections you need to take. So, be sure and know which ones you are supposed to take. The people at Prometric do not know which sections you need. Simply skip over the sections (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) that are not needed. You can also choose in which order to take each section. At the end, you can request a copy of your results and they will print it and put their seal on it. They did not give me a copy of the Critical Thinking section. I pulled that section up after I got home.

I had about an hour and a half remaining after I finished the test. I didn't realize I would have so much time to take it! Take your time, go with your first answer. You can not go back and change your answers.

Good Luck!!

So while we're taking the test, we can choose which sections to skip? (Chemistry, Bio, and physics, right?) And I'm Sure someone already asked this before, but do they give us a calculator, or can we bring one?

Yes, you can choose which ones to skip. I started at the top of the list and skipped over what we didn't need. If you are planning on applying elsewhere as well, I would verify what is needed for that school. They are not all the same for the HESI requirements.

When you go to take the HESI, it's sort of like entering a "secure zone". When you get there and sign in, they give you a key for a locker to put all of your things in except for your ID. I think they even take your picture...I can't really recall. Anyway, they supply everything you need to take the test. They give you a couple of dry erase sheets to do calculations on as well as a calculator on the computer to use. LOL! I had the same questions!

OMG thank you so much! You're a life saver, now let's just hope I ace this thing!

I finally got my transcript eval in the mail! Yay :-)

My next question to you guys is do they take the overall GPA into consideration, or is it just the nursing prereq and science GPAs? I was told at one of the info sessions that the overall is not taken into account. Only the HESI scores, nursing and science GPAs. Is that what everyone else understands as correct, or has anyone heard something different?

I took both the TEAS V and HESI A2. TEAS is easier, but science is broader. I think I covered this topic in a previous comment.

Did you get your scores when you walk out of the testing room? I took the TEAS last year. How would you compare the reading between Hesi and Teas?

Also, what types of conversions do you have to know? Like grams to lbs? Anything like that or will they give you conversion factors?

any question you have regarding conversions on the TEAS, they give you the conversion factor.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

On the HESI I think there was a conversion factor with oz but I'm not sure if it was for pints or quarts? Also I remember there were a couple questions about military time. Wish I remembered more specifically but I hope that helps a little!

I'm sorry flower. I didn't realize you were asking about the HESI. I don't recall there being any conversion questions on the HESI. Just familiarize yourself with how many ounces are in a Quart or pint or gallon. Stuff like that....like hallie said :-)

* - nani3 & mze116, thank you for the complement on the scores. Also, mze116 glad you got your eval letter. Still crossing my fingers and praying... I just wish there was more insight on how they choose the people that are accepted.

I'm just going to vent to you guys. I'm in chemistry and I am literally so worried. The class is terrible, the professor doesn't curve and at UTA gen chem 1 is specific for premed majors. I'm struggling! I have a 4.0 science right now but I'm afraid this chem is gonna bring me down since it ends right before the deadline:( I'm so bummed! Chemistry has nothing to do with whether or not I will be a good nurse or not...right?
