Hello-
If you have been accepted into the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing Accelerated program and have questions/comments about the whole process-post here! We can all get through these hoops together:yeah:
Well I did get a reply and they accepted me but they want me to begin in the Spring. That is ok I will go to TWU because half way through UT I will be saying to myself that I would be graduating from TWU by now. It hurts to turn UT down but that is ok. I will be going back for my Masters. At least I know that I can get in, which is an awesome feeling.
Here is where I stand: I got all the items on the checklist done. Already had done all my immunizations and CPR because I knew I would get into my backup, Lone Star, if I didn't get into UT. Everything is sent in, and I called and they received my letter of intent, they've cashed my check. Criminal background said completed on their website, but the hold isn't off yet on UTLink. I went today for drug test--made it from Conroe to the lab and back in 2 hours. I was flying! I've applied for financial aid and a private loan, and I'll hear about the private loan in a couple of days. The only things I'm still concerned about are that I have a hold because I am finishing two pre-reqs that don't end until May 8, so I can't register until they get the transcripts. Henry told me to call Deanna Pressley, but she didn't return my voicemail. I'm really worried because I have to be in the UK from May 10-20. That brings my other concern. I have to miss orientation because I have this unchangeable trip that's been scheduled for a year! I talked to JoAnn and she said I'll just have to miss orientation, but I am still in. I was very worried it would keep me out. Would anyone be willing to get an extra set of everything for me at orientation and I will drive anywhere to get it from you? Jo Ann said I just have to contact all the professors later this month to get the reading assignments, so I'm going to do that as soon as I have the money to get my books. I talked with Dianne, the manager of the nursing bookstore, who is really nice, and she said she has the books now, but the package is only partially used books. She said that as it stands now, it is about $1100, but that there will be more used for ya'll to buy on orientation day. I'm assuming that means it's cheaper then. I am not buying the package because I already have a good steth and I don't want to mail order shoes. Dianne said that the scrubs have to be plain navy blue--no piping, but can have pockets. Shoes have to be white tennis shoes or white nursing shoes with white laces. No crocs or clogs--have to have a back. She said the orange nameplates are special order with the engraving, and she'll make a couple of orders so if we miss one, we'll catch the other. The lab coat is the while short (hip length) one. She has the UT patches at the store to buy and we sew them on the lab coat. We need bandage scissors, penlight, and four-color pen, all of which I have from a paramedic friend. Allheart.com is another alternative source for some of these things. I'm not sure how all the things in the package add up to compare to the open market, but the shoes and steth are the major cost components. One thing I would suggest, and I'm absolutely no expert (I'm changing from teaching to nursing), but be sure that you can hear well with the steth before you buy it. Also, I want to really try on the shoes before buying anything since we'll be spending so many hours on our feet. If anyone sees that I've missed anything, please let me know, and I'll be glad to do the same for you. This is so much to do in such a short time! And I've really felt like I've missed a lot of work too! I guess it's the hazard of changing careers!
I bet everybody is trying to get their things ready. please i would like to know if they send another round of packets. i was reading some other post and it says something about the school of nursing sending another packet with instruction about tuition and registration. I would like to know when they do this as i said i have never receive mails from the school even after trying to rectify the problems. you would be doing me a huge favor if i do i would also inform you guys if i get anything. thanks
Good morning Javagabby,
How do you apply for a personnal loan. in my previous school i sponsored myself so i have never done this i ask this in case i do not qualify for the scholarships. i tried to do an application from the link on the schools web site. The school is not even listed on there so the application is not even possible. can you pleas type the url so we can access the website also. thank you
I went through Chase, as I already have a banking relationship with them. Just go to Chase.com and click on the education loans link. Other banks do private loans too. I did try Bank of America, as I bank with them too, but on their website they said they aren't doing them right now. I'm meeting with them in person today, and will ask if that is correct and let you know. Other banks do this type of loan too. It isn't based on financial need, but rather on credit worthiness. Good luck!
Javagabby-I would have no problem filling you in on what goes on in the orientation and getting an extra set of anything that they give out for you. It is quite intense to go through all of this with such a limited understanding of what it will really be like! Thanks for all of the info on supplies and such-I am going to wait awhile on that but I am right there with you about not wanting to buy shoes/scrubs without trying them on! I want to make sure that are super comfortable. Well-I got the criminal check done, immunizations, I still need a physical. I have been having a hard time with that b/c most places want you to not eat for 8 hours before coming in. The only way I could do this is if I had a morning appt. and I work everyday 7am. So hard to get all of this stuff done while working!
Elliebell,
Thank you so very much! I am trying to arrange it so that my family goes to the UK on the 10th as planned, and I join them, leaving right after orientation on the 13th and flying all night. I called the airline yesterday, and they can get me on a plane at 6:35 the 13th and I'll be in London at 9:30 in the morning the 14th, and it won't cost me any extra money. Hopefully I won't have to take you up on your offer, but it is much appreciated.
My doctor didn't make me take a fasting blood test, but I've seen him before. He had taken blood before, but not fasting, and used those values. He has been super nice and very supportive and filled out all the papers for me with a pretty minimal physical. If you are anywhere near the Woodlands and would like his name and number, I'll be glad to email them to you. He's become our family doctor a few months ago, and we love him. Takes lots of time, not arrogant, really listens, and very encouraging and interested in us as people.
hello future students!!! i am in the accelerated program now, counting down the days - so congratulations and good luck next year. a couple of tips from someone who went through the same things you guys are going through now......don't stress too much about getting registered right away, it's not like the classes will fill up as with traditional college classes. i wouldn't suggest buying the scrubs package. i bought it last year thinking that is what i had to do, but then i ended up rebuying everything to get better quality items. you can buy your scrubs anywhere as long as they are navy blue (i bought the gray's anatomy ones since they are sooo comfortable). you will buy the ut patch from the book store and sew it on. shoes - they want white tennis shoes of any kind although i never saw anyone get in trouble for having other color shoes. make sure you buy comfortable shoes, your feet will be killing you after running around for 12 hours. books can be costly but i would suggest waiting to buy every book on the list until you at least go to orientation and see which books the professors suggest. sometimes they will have a whole page list of textbooks, but you really only need to buy 1/4 of the books. i bought a barnes and noble membership and ordered my books online - free shipping and tons of membership savings. i have saved a lot of money buying my books this way. plus your classes will only be 6-8 weeks long, so when you start in the summer, you will only be starting with 2-3 classes and you'll have time to order the other books. hope this helps, good luck!
Thanks so much for the tips!! Where do you find the Gray's Anatomy scrubs? I like the idea of the B and N membership. I was also thinking of getting a kindle and downloading-less books to haul and poss. cheaper. My only concern is that Amazon would not have all of the books. Well-any way-thank you so much for the information and for the clue that we don't have to panic about registering!
