UTHSC (Houston) Spring

Published

This thread is dedicated to the applicants of UT Houston's Spring 2012 application period. I've seen various threads posted throughout the discussion forum regarding the upcoming application period, but they are scattered and hard to keep track of. Maybe if we keep our discussion in one place it will be easier for us all to follow :)

I'm applying with the following stats:

Pre-req GPA: 3.21

Science GPA: 3.66

Overall GPA: 2.81

I know my chances of getting in aren't great with my overall GPA, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed anyway! Please post your stats, your thoughts, your experiences, ideas and opinions here:)

Good luck to everyone!!

Does anyone know what our transcript evaluation is for and what it covers? I haven't received mine yet. I have been reading about our transcript evaluations coming in the mail. Does it just cover our grades and hesi scores?

Evaluation is the courses/grades they're using toward the prereqs/overall/science. It also lists what you're missing, if any.

Hey everybody! I just started this semester as well so if you have any questions I can try to help :)

I had applied for Spring 2011, had my interview (and was told I did very well and I would get recommended for the program) but then I ended up not getting in. I said to resubmit my application for fall but I didn't hear anything for the longest time so I figured I didn't get in again. I randomly checked UT link one day and it had said I was accepted! It was super exciting!

I don't remember exact grades but I had something like a 3.5 in my sciences, something over than in my nursing courses (3.6-3.7?), and then like a 2.5 (previous degree with a few bad semesters before I changed majors brought it down way low). I got an 850 on the critical thinking and like a 92 or 93 something on the HESI.

Good luck! If you don't get in this time, don't give up! But of course think positive thoughts!

Getting in is one thing, doing well is another. I highly recommend getting admitted to the UT Arlington Academic Partnership program and taking pathophysiology and then transferring it to UT Houston. TAMU Corpus Christi also has a pathophysiology course that may transfer. You need a 3 semester hour, junior level, nursing pathophysiology course for it to be considered for transfer. No guarantees as to transferrability, but even if you don't succeed, you're way ahead for being better prepared when you do take patho at UT Houston.

A couple quick tips: AFAIK every nursing school requires the Hep B vaccine. That series of 3 shots takes 6 months start-to-finish. Go get your 1st shot now if you haven't already.

You might want to consider getting immunization titers, even if you have your shot records. I had all the necessary/required vaccines as a public school child in Texas, but I had titers drawn and my Chickenpox immunity level was way below the minimum. Yes, shots are no fun, but getting any of those diseases is a LOT less fun.

The Junior League of Houston offers FREE BLS CPR classes. They fill up quick, so keep checking the website for when they open up new classes: http://www.juniorleaguehouston.org/?nd=p_event&event_category=CPR

Finally, start your financial aid applications NOW. There is no "fast" in financial aid, and some of the students in my class still don't know if they're getting anything. I didn't find out about my loans until the Wednesday before classes started, and I still didn't get my money for another week.

Hi everyone!!

I applied to UTHSC for Spring 2012 with the following:

Pre-req GPA: 3.8

Science GPA: 4.0

Overall GPA: 3.4

HESI score: 93%

Hoping and PRAYING that those scores are good enough to get in!! Lots of waiting to do now...

GOOD LUCK!! :anpom:

Another quick question:

When looking at your admission profile in UT Link, did anyone have "Official document not recieved" (or something of that nature) beside TSI Score/Exempt Group?? I was exempt from taking the TSI (college entrance test) because of high TAKS scores in high school. This information is listed ON my transcripts, which UTHSC has recieved.

When I called a counselor at UTHSC, she said not to worry about it and that they will get the information from my transcripts. However, UT Link says my application is "Incomplete" because of it!!

Kinda worries me a little, but I guess I'll trust the counselor.

Thanks!

It has thy for just about everyone, the registrar told me not to worry about it

MLRP, your scores are great- very similar to mine- I definitely think you'll get in! Don't worry about the TSI thing. Technically, your application will stay "incomplete" until they receive your final transcript from any classes you're currently taking. It doesn't mean they aren't looking at you application now. Does everyone know that the Holds page will change 1st, the day before your admission status changes? Admin>Status>Holds is where you should be checking.

I took the HESI the end of Aug and they're still not posted on UTLINK.

My HESI scores too forever to show up too. I took mine in December and I think they showed up on UTLink sometime in March. The reason is that the scores are sent to the Student Affairs office in the SON, but everything else is sent to the UTH Registrar's office, and both offices are so busy that sometimes there are delays in communication. If you're worried that your scores haven't been received, call the Student Affairs office.

What did applicants look for in the past? I read the previous threads, but I forgot what they noticed about holds. Something like they place a hold on you? I just have CPR and immunizations holds right now, so does it add a few more if you're accepted or what?

Right. Everyone starts out with those 2 holds. Once you're admitted, 3 or 4 more holds will get added. I can't remember what they're called exactly; one is for the background check, one is for the residency questionnaire, one is for when they receive your signed admission agreement (ie, you plan to enroll).

If you get rejected, nothing will change- no holds get removed, you just keep the 2 original holds and no new holds get added.

From what I remember from our admission process, people were admitted over a 2-3 week period. Your holds will change on Day 1, and on Day 2 your Admissions status will change to either "you have been granted full admission" or "you have been granted provisional admission."

I think they wait until all the admits have been notified before they start sending out rejection letters. I think they also might keep a small pool of "maybes" that may get admitted depending on how many of the 1st choice admits decline admittance because they want to go somewhere else.
