UTHSC-Houston Fall 2012 Applicants

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for everyone applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I believe they will be accepting applications from January 15-April 1, so the sooner the better! Their admission requirements are pretty standard:

Minimum Pre-Req Gpa: 2.75

Minimum Science Gpa: 3.0

Minimum HESI A2 score: 75% or higher on all required sections - math, reading comprehension, vocabulary/general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, critical thinking.

My info is really not that competitive, but I'm going to give it a shot anyways -

Pre-Req Gpa: 3.30

Science Gpa: 3.0 (Barely cutting it! :crying2: )

Overall Gpa: 3.28

Hesi score: 93.3% overall, with my lowest score being a 90.

My gpa is not the best, but I still have 3 more classes to finish this semester, and I'm aiming for all A's! I think the best thing I have going for me is my HESI scores.

Anyone else planning on applying? What are your stats? Any questions? Lets hear them, and good luck to all who are applying!

No problem ktdidit. It doesn't surprise me about the experience levels for different agencies. I think it has to do with the call load. I do intend on starting out in the ER. I don't want to stop at just a BSN though. I plan on going on to get my CRNA or DNP. Being that these programs require ICU experience as well, I'm gonna do a year in the ER, then move to the MICU for a year, and lastly remain in the STICU. Either that or any other high frequency ICU. We'll see though.

I got my BS last year in Biology and finished up my pre-reqs over the summer and last semester as well. All in all, i'm working and enjoying these few months off before hopefully starting nursing school!

How about you?

lvl1trauma,

I got my AS in December and have all my pre-reqs done as well. I'm a stay at home mom and am really enjoying these last few months off! My little one is starting kindergarten in the Fall so I'm really trying to soak up this time, I'll never get it back.

Are you going to study or review during the time off? Most of my buddies went into the Spring semester at UT and they said fluid and electrolyte balance was huge during the first semester. They recommended the Mosby's books. I looked at Barnes and Nobles and they were thirty bucks but I found some for ten on Amazon. I'm going to review those and start looking into Pathophysiology. Other than that I am going to relax and wait impatiently to hear back from the nursing program! Did you apply anywhere else besides UTHSC?

Congrats on the AS and to your kiddo starting kindergarten! I'm applying to TWU as well as UTMB. I emailed the Pharmacology professors at each institute and they all listed the same pharm book: Pharmacology for Nursing Care (Lehne). I bought it from Barnes and Noble for like 70 or 80. I also verified using the bookstore search. Buying the book was the first step. Working at the ER, my days off are usually catch up on chores, errands, and sleep! But hopefully I can start reading that book. My hope is to get through the majority of the book from now until August and actually do something more than just read (i.e. take notes, make outlines, etc.). As far as waiting? Its January 25th already! It feels like New Years was yesterday! Hopefully the next 2-3 months fly by.

Which Mosby books are you talking about? Drug references? Also which hospitals do you volunteer at?!

I started off as a volunteer at Memorial Hermann and you're absolutely right. You see some of the most amazing stuff. After I graduated from college, I decided to get my EMT-B so I can finally be a part of the action.

lvl1trauma,

Thanks for the heads up on the Pharm book! I think any kind of studying beforehand will be beneficial! The Mosby book my buddies recommend was a spiral flip book: Mosby's Fluid & Electrolyte Memory Note Cards. They told me to take it with me everywhere I go and if ever have time study up. They are using it now on top of their studies.

I volunteer at St. Lukes and Methodist! I love it, it has been a great experience. I applied to TWU and UTMB also. Are you going to keep working while you go to school?

Ahhh okay! I think I'll get that book. I think you should throw on another hospital ;) *wink wink*.

I've been debating the idea of working while at nursing school. My main goal of becoming a volunteer was to give back to the community but I quickly realized I got into one of the top hospitals and would have that name attached to me forever. After I became a PCA, I realized that I have a job set for me when I graduate nursing school. I have a coworker who is currently at UTMB and she's been working weekends while still going to school. I've also been asking around with the other nurses and they've all said the same thing: "It'll be hard and you have to set your priorities straight, but it's doable." I think I'm going to ask for a month or so off to get situated at nursing school and then come back to do weekends only.

The neat thing about nursing school is the schedule of these courses. They aren't like regular college (MW courses and TuTh courses, etc.). So we sorta get the week to study for our Monday course, etc.

Lol that's funny! Hopefully you'll be able to adjust your schedule or they will allow you to work part time. You can always try it and see if it works and if not then you can go from there! I wish you the best of luck!

I must say thank you both for sharing this information!! I plan on picking up some books myself to study over the summer. I would start now, but I've got a full plate right now ;) I've applied to UTMB as well, but didn't meet the minimum criteria to apply to TWU bc I hadn't taken stats and nutrition :( wished I'd known that from the get go.... Would have taken that sooner, but the counselors apparently don't know this bit of info....

Heavykevy- how was your test today??? And what books do you recommend that we get that could be assistive in helping us prepare?

Hey everybody, so I was just on my UT link and I have noticed that there is something new going on in my account. I don't recall this previously being there. When I log in and it takes me to the home page, there is the "to-do" list on the right side. In the drop down box it says account inquiry. When I hit go it takes me to an account summary page. On that page is a blue box that says "We are unable to display your account at this time. To access this information, contact the Bursar's office to complete your account profile." Does anybody elses link show this? I called the Student affairs office and the lady told me that you only contact the Bursars office once you've been accepted..... it is too early to have been accepted.... so why is it saying this??? She thinks that is just that my application has been completed in the system (My app has shown complete since before the deadline date). Agh!!! The wait is driving me crazy ;)

FYI - She did say that the application status link should change in mid March and that the official letters will go out April 15. They will be accepting 150 students! Does anybody know what the number of students accepted for Spring 2012?

Hemphia,

I noticed that last night! When I clicked on it I received the same message as you! My application has also been complete for some time. Hmmm ... I can't help but be a little excited! Anybody else?

mine is the same. No changes. I wish there were some changes. maybe b/c I still have 2 classes to complete this semester. SO my application is not complete.

ktdidit - I cannot help but think positively over this as well I really hope that it is a good sign.... Especially since this is a new program, maybe they haven't worked out the kinks yet ;)

Jaybird.... I still have classes that I am completing this semester. I am taking Stats, Nutrition, Gov't & History.... plus I am signed up for Organic Chemistry.

Anybody else????? :uhoh3:
