Was waiting for someone else to make this thread, but I'm too anxious!
I am applying for the Summer 2019 application cycle at UT Health Science in Houston.
Stats:
HESI Overall: 92.4
Nursing Pre-req GPA: 3.88
Science Pre-req GPA: 4.0
Cumulative GPA: 3.41
My science Pre-req is excluding Chemistry. I'll be taking that in the Spring along with a few last minute pre-reqs. I have 2 F's in random classes on my transcript from a few year ago when I lost my mode of transportation. Unfortunately that's bringing my cumulative GPA down. Still feel like I have a shot though, so I am applying!
I'll also be applying for UTMB Fall 2019, Lone Star Fall 2019, and reapplying to UT Health Fall 2019 (if need be).
I think I speak for everyone when I say we all came here to compete, compete to get into this amazing program. So if they are picking randomly I see that as a major insult to those who worked their asses off in these prerequisites bc lord knows there’s a lot of them. If I’m denied I wanna be denied knowing I just wasn’t good enough, thats fine. Not that they played eeny meeny miny moe? cmon now

But like I said who knows how accurate that statement is or if it’s just his own thoughts on the application process. He also mentioned how there have been students who pass nursing school with a 4.0 but end up not necessarily being the best nurses. He mentioned that right after the other statement so idk if he was saying he thought UTH might consider the fact that not everyone who is academically smart would make good nurses so they attempt to accept diverse stats? Idk lol but it’s really all conjecture because it seems that no ones knows for sure. But I figure any little bit of information Is helpful. Unless it confused anyone else more or made anyone more anxious then I’m sorry!! Definitely not my intention.
This is actually pretty true! They get so many qualified people and they can’t justify choosing ONLY top students which ties directly into the whole “4.0 in school but not the best nurse” thing! You can be a really good test taker, but not a people person = not that great of a nurse, but graduated top of your class. Inversely, you can be a horrible test taker and be the most outgoing and caring person = a great nurse. They pick 4.0’s in addition to the other lower GPA students so that there’s a diverse pool of students.
Remember though, there’s other factors that play into the application besides GPA!! Sometimes it’s prior experience/degrees that puts you into the acceptance category because you have background knowledge that could benefit both you and others in the program. They look at A LOT of things when considering students so the pool of “potentials” isn’t anywhere near as big as y’all may think!
But yea the applicant pool for Spring was anywhere between 1200-1400 people and Fall had 1600+ which is INSANE.
Of those applicants, I bet at least a quarter of them get thrown out almost immediately because they barely meet the minimum grade/score requirements. To apply, you only need a 2.75 in Nursing Prereqs and a 3.0 in Sciences. They would only give someone with those stats a spot if they had 20 years as an LVN or somethin. You’re probably looking more at 1000 or so during peak applicant season of people they are genuinely considering. (Which is still a lot, of course.) Similar to how in medical school communities I always see “54% of med school applicants get denied”. While true, a lot of those applicants were throwing a Hail Mary.

Yea that’s true. I’m sure it’s not as bad as we may think it is. Still very competitive but probably not as competitive as we assume when it’s all said and done and the final “pool” of applicants is picked.
I'm so worried about my acceptance that it's freaking me out
Due to this I'm preparing myself for the worse case scenario that I don't get into the Summer 2019 semester. So Fall semester it is! The only problem is that my HESI score isn't competitive enough (86) for this sem. I have less than two weeks to retake my HESI. Is this possible? Will my scores still send even if I take it one day before the deadline? I'm disappointed that i'm not more prepared but I really want to ensure I get into UTH ?
Also, for info about my application (this is from the top of my head)
HESI: 86
Science gpa: 3.8 or 3.9
cumulative gpa: 3.7 or 3.8
The only advantages I have is that I worked as Biology tutor while taking my prerequisites. Also, I was in the honors program and took some prereqs as honors. I honestly hope this is enough to get me in my HESI score terrifies me

My HESI score wasn’t much better (87.2) and somehow I got in! My science GPA was a 3.5 and my overall was a 3.77, so I’d say you’ve got a pretty good shot just based on my own scores compared to yours. :)
Personally I wouldn’t retake the HESI if I were you. I was in the EXACT same position (having 2 weeks to study and retake it) and I decided not to. 1. It’s truly not enough time to get a better handle on the material and 2. The testing centers only send the scores at the end of the month (I believe), which wouldn’t help you at all for the 15th deadline.
Saying “don’t stress” is 150% easier said than done, but there’s truly nothing more you can do at this point. And ya know what? That’s okay :) You’re still amazing and should be proud of all you’ve accomplished thus far which is a heck of a lot!!!

Hey! It's up to you whether or not you want to retake it, but I do know your HESI results will be accepted even if you take it the day before the deadline. Just make sure you use the UTH HESI school code so it automatically gets sent. Also to be safe, check with your specific testing center, I'm not sure if they are all the same but when I called mine (Test Center USA Houston) they said they send it ASAP if the deadline is before the end of the month.

I highly doubt it’s random. With everyone just posting straight stats it can seem like a lottery system when someone with lower stats beats out someone with a 4.0, but we don’t get to see all the things they do (ie. course load per semester, work history, previous degrees or upper division classes).
Anywho, pretty bummed we didn’t find out today.
Here’s hoping for Monday! Have a great weekend y’all!
