Was waiting for someone else to make this thread, but I'm too anxious!
I am applying for the Summer 2019 application cycle at UT Health Science in Houston.
Stats:
HESI Overall: 92.4
Nursing Pre-req GPA: 3.88
Science Pre-req GPA: 4.0
Cumulative GPA: 3.41
My science Pre-req is excluding Chemistry. I'll be taking that in the Spring along with a few last minute pre-reqs. I have 2 F's in random classes on my transcript from a few year ago when I lost my mode of transportation. Unfortunately that's bringing my cumulative GPA down. Still feel like I have a shot though, so I am applying!
I'll also be applying for UTMB Fall 2019, Lone Star Fall 2019, and reapplying to UT Health Fall 2019 (if need be).

I am trying to travel to another country before hand from April to early May and was wondering if there is anything for the school that might be conflicting with that time frame. Thank you:))
Hey!! There’s New Student Admit Day and there’s Boot Camp (orientation)!
New students day is honestly just a good way to meet your fellow cohort members and get some info on the program that you may want now that you’re a student!
Boot camp is just like any other orientation and if it’s anything like mine, it’ll be the Thursday before the 1st day of class (which is May 20th)!
I don’t believe either are mandatory (orientation might be but i know a handful of people couldn’t make it) so I think you’re good! I do plan on holding a meet and greet sometime after acceptance letters to out but that’s about it! :)

My plan is if everyone starts posting acceptances on March 1st and I haven’t received anything by about March 7ish I’ll submit my fall application Because I believe at that point I’ll probably either be denied or waitlisted and from what I’ve heard not many people get off the waitlist.
Yea you’re very right about that. It’s RARE for people to survive the waitlist (I’m an example of being denied last Fall!) so I highly recommend reapplying. if you haven’t heard anything the day that everyone goes crazy with acceptances, I hate to say it but that’s it right there. They send them all out at once so if you don’t get yours, the waitlist is a chance but it’s unlikely (speaking from experience).

I might start looking at dosage calculation videos on YouTube for the heck of it since that’s the number one thing every current nursing student has suggested.
YES!!!! Look at the dimensional analysis way of solving it. It’s a bit complicated until you get the hang of it but WOW does it help. Plus, I plan on holding almost like “tutoring” sessions with everyone after the 1st D&S exam for anyone that didn’t pass so that y’all can KILL it for the 2nd or 3rd attempts!! I know exactly how the test is so I’ll gladly help anyone with understanding it! ?
18 hours ago, Map09 said:Lol i have plenty of school work to keep me occupied but I always seem to find time to worry and think about whether I’ll get in or not lol. How soon after we start school would we take that dosage exam?
You take it within the first 2 weeks! The first attempt (for my cohort) was a Tuesday, the second was that Friday and then the third was the following Friday!
It’s honestly really easy (I taught about half of my cohort how to do it) but little dumb mistakes will get you if you’re not careful - speaking from the experience of not passing it all 3 times due to little errors I made!!
If y’all havent figured out yet, I’m super transparent about everything, good or bad! I’ll be 100% honest about my grades (and anything honestly) whether I failed or absolutely aced whatever it was. I figured I’d put that out there for anyone who has questions! I’m going to tell you exactly how it is without all the sugar coating that other students may like to give. ?
(That being said, ya girl absolutely killed her patho test this week with a 95% so pretty proud)?

It was hard for me to pick which one to quote you said so many great things!! Lol so I just settled on this one since it’s the last thing you said lol. First And foremost congratulations on your patho test that is a awesome! I hope to be doing that well once I am (hopefully) in the program. Also I think I will heed your advice concerning applying for fall if I don’t hear anything after everyone has started talking about acceptances. And thank you for the recommendation as to what to look into for the dosage exam. Similar to accionursingbook I think I will start to look into it once I have some free time. Also I think the meet and greet is a great idea and I would be excited to meet everyone once we are all in the program!! And as far as your transparency im sure we are all super appreciative of that and so grateful that you have taken the time in your busy schedule to come back to the forum and help us out. I haven’t seen anyone else that has been accepted go to such lengths in all the other forums and I am, as I’m sure everyone else is, super thankful!! Thank you so much!

AHH thank you so much!!! I was so worried about that test because I’ve been SICK (these dang weather changes are killing me) so I hadn’t been able to study as much. I guess the stuff stuck though???♀️
Best advice I can give about classes as of right now: STUDY. Oh my goodness, I’m begging you, please study and listen to the consensus of the older upperclassmen! If a lot of them say to do something for 1 class, it’s probably a good idea!!!
But yea!! Look into it whenever you can! You’ll be a pro come test time ;)
The meet and greet idea is actually something I’m kinda stealing from my current cohort tbh! We set one up about a week and a half before school started so we can do something similar for this cohort! :)
And oh my gosh of course!!!! It’s no problem at all!!! I made an account specifically to help you guys and ease your stress a little bit?I was a total ghost when it came to my cohort’s forum so I figured interacting with you guys would help to better transition from one group to the next (especially so that yall would actually know me considering I won’t be around much this first semester since I’ll be done with J1 classes)!
Speaking of, I’m more than happy to help y’all with classes this summer too!! I’ll be taking a light-ish class load because of the whole D&S thing so I’ll be a little more available to help y’all grasp the tougher concepts or just study in general :)
As promised! ??
Question:
Hey Kelsey. Wondering if you could give me an idea as far as what your schedule looks likes. How often are you in class? what are your hours? days off?
My Response:
Hey! Yes of course!
So J1 semester isn’t all that bad honestly. :) You’ve got 4 classes as well as clinicals.
Health Assessment is 7-8:50am on Mondays followed by a mandatory lab that you get randomly assigned at 1 of 3 times (9:15-11:15, 11:30-1:30 or 1:45-3:45).
Care 1 is 9-12pm on Tuesdays. This one is directly linked to your clinicals!
Pharm is 9-12pm on Wednesday followed by Patho 1-4pm. (This day is ROUGH between uncomfy seats and LOTS of material so bring snacks and coffee!).
Fridays for the first 5(?) weeks are your Care 1 Clinicals day from 8-12. We have lecture from 8-10 then you go to your assigned lab room from 10-12. This class will “discontinue” and become your clinicals! You’ll be randomly assigned a hospital location (you’ll have the ability to switch with someone else who’s willing if you want to) based on how you answer a survey where you have the option of location or time (day) preference. Clinicals are 10 hours (6:30am-4:30pm) on thursday, friday or saturday for 6 weeks and you MUST attend them.
So days off..... LOL. I don’t have class on Thursdays, but I’m here anyways for study groups with my friends. My weekends are my only “free time”, so I usually sleep in a little but I still do plenty of homework and studying. I truly never see my family much at all but I’m one of the crazy dedicated ones. I stay late and get here early which definitely pays off. It’s a struggle but it’s completely worth it if you’re willing/able to do it.
This is so helpful, Kelsey! I think it also paints a REALLY GOOD picture for those who are considering UTs program and think that they can WORK at the same time. This confirms that the answer is NO. I know we are all trying to figure out how to support ourselves and go to school, but with accelerated programs (reason why it's called the pacesetter program!) it just isn't a good fit.
Kelsey, do you know of any memebers of your cohort dropping out because they don't realize until after the first day that they can't maintain a job while in school? I went to an info session for UH's program and they said they have students drop every year because they can't hold a job while in school. And the unfortunate thing is, they can't take someone from the waitlist to fill that spot after the first class day!

Aww I’m happy to help!!
As insane as this sounds, it IS possible to work a job as well. I’m still working at my pharmacy technician job at Walgreens (granted, only 1 day a month!) but I know others who are still working much more than myself! It’s a HUGE balancing act.
At New Student Admit Day, the faculty (mainly Mrs. Mendoza) do tell you that working is difficult and they recommend against it. They DO recommend that close friends and especially family step up to help you in any way. For example, all my parents out there, you’re going to want to work with any friends and family that would be able to watch/pick-up/drive your kiddos at times when you simply can’t.
You hit it right on the head, though. It’s a pacesetter program for a reason. It’s quick, difficult and meant to test you in multiple ways, but you come out of it a better nurse because of all of these factors. ?
I’m only 20 but my family has stepped up to help me in every way they can which I appreciate more than words can describe. I’ve made different friends here at school so I’m truly not lacking in the “social” department. So like I said, balancing act!!!!
One thing though is that you have 10 days to “accept” your acceptance and put $200 down to “save your spot” (which comes off of tuition btw!) or else your spot is automatically given to someone who’s considered waitlisted. Just a heads up!! ?
