USVI on St.Thomas

Published

I am a pre-nursing student at the University of Michigan and I basically have all my prerequisites finished. I have not taken the entrance test yet because I'm considering moving out of the states and experiencing life on the island as a pre-nursing student. I was considering transfering to University of the Virgin Island, but was not sure, like if I ever wanted to come back to the states to work as a nurse would it be a problem, being that I would have graduated from UVI's nursing program. Any information would be useful.;)

Thanks everyone!!!

WillWall, my girlfriend and I are moving down to St. Thomas in january! I'll be at UVI for nursing and my girlfriend will eventually go for nursing as well. When are you guys moving down? How'd you hear about UVI? I'm excited to hear other folks stories about this unique path... Where are you moving from?

Hello everyone!! well let me start out by saying that I did not go to USVI but, I was born and raised. As far as I know you do qualify for finacial aid because it is a u.s. territory so its exactly the same as any school in the states. They are two campuses one on St. Thomas and one on St.Croix( I think only st.thomas offers the bsn..st.croix ASN). I am from st.croix but have frequently visted all three islands. St.thomas is really beautiful but, word of advice it is really congested and really more expensive than st.croix. Please be aware of sticker shock!!!..lol They are usually scholarships and other stuff you can apply for you just have to find out at your finacial aid office. I hope everything works out for you guys!

P.S Welcome to island life I hope you guys enjoy it!!:wink2::wink2:

To sunset 87...you do not need a visa to come to the United states Virgin Islands(USVI) ...thats what it stands for..if you are a u.s. citizen of course. And UVI (University of the Virgin Islands) does have dorms on both campuses. And as a matter of fact like 2 years ago they just builded some new ones.(st.croix campus). Go on uvi.edu you will get more info on the campus.

When I mentioned needing a visa, I was talking about to go to the International University of Nursing on St. Kitts. I know you don't need a visa to come to the Virgin Islands. :D I should've made my post more clear that all of those things I mentioned were about IUON.

I live in the Virgin Islands and I'm currently attending UVI on St. Croix. I just finished my first semester of the nursing program. I think the dorms are closer to 10 years old though. It's true that St. Croix doesn't have a BSN program, but it does have a Bachelor's completion program for RNs.

UVI

-financial aid

-dorms

-affordable tuition

-don't need a passport or visa

-small class sizes (on st. croix this year had the biggest class with 28 students)

I am interested in going to UVI but I'm nervous about moving to the Virgin Islands. Mainly, because I don't know where I will live and work. I want to move there some time in May or June. Is it hard to find employment? Can you work while pursuing the BSN? Any info about the St. Thomas and the nursing program will be helpful.

Hello

If anyone is currently enrolled at UVI in Saint Thomas can you let me know if you got housing? If not, where did you find housing?

Thanks

I too yearn to experience the island life while simultaneously furthering my education. I would have gone to UVI straight out of h.s., I knew about the university, but I'm terrified of the weather during hurricane season. I'm from Chicago, & I.lve never lived anywhere else until now - I'm still only apprx. 200 mi away - so all I've ever had to deal with was erratic weather changes, cold snowy winters & the occassional blizzard, which when compared to the threat of earthquakes - Cali, etc. - & hurricanes USVI, LA. - really isnt that bad. I would like to think that the cost of living in St. Thomas is lower than in Chicago. Does anyone have any info on this? I need to research the cost of living because I wouldnt b able to make the move until Fall 2010 & I dont see myself living in a dorm. Although, if a single is only a little more than $1200/ semester - mite have to consider it. -'d definitely miss having my own kitchen & bath!

My family has a home in St. Thomas and I have spent many summers and winters there my whole life. It's great but it gets old. Also because you are on an Island that has to import alot of products, it is very expenssive to live there. KFC was like 40.00 for two people to eat. And the wonderful hurriacane season. Aslong as UNVI is on and American Island and not a British one you will have no problem coming back home to the states. Good Luck.

Hey Sunset,

Can you tell about the program if you are still there?

I am applying to the USVI nursing program... is anyone in it or have completed it? I was just wondering what the program is like, what it's like living there, the professors, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated!! I live in southern california and the 5 waitlists I am currently on range from 2-5 years. No joke. So going to UVI is very tempting!!! Also, I am already 26 and would really like to not still be working as an ER tech at 30...Thanks for any input :)

lauren- i have a friend who is attending school there. her name is genevieve, we are facebook conversing at this very moment :)

so far she says she loves it, first year shes not a resident so she pays $360 a credit, but once you're a resident it drops to $120.

I know exactly how you feel, Lauren! I just turned 27 and would like to just START a nursing program. Have you applied yet? Did you/are you applying to other schools? Who knows...maybe we'll be classmates in the Caribbean one day?! :nurse::lol2:
