Hi There! I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying for USF's Non-RN MSN CNL program for Summer 2016.
Best of luck to everyone!
Hey there- had to register to get the scoop on how others are faring! I was recently rejected by Dominican (because they won't consider my undergrad gpa... would've been nice to know!) So anyhow this is my last option for now. Finishing up micro and psych this semester.I'm curious as to what you all did to satisfy the stats requirement. I did not take a course that was exclusively stats, rather a year of research, etc and we often utilized statistics. I'm curious as to whether or not this will pass.
How is everyone feeling about applications? Confident?
Hey ngarcia731, what do you mean by they won't consider your undergrad gpa? That's interesting... I think this MSN program may be a great alternative route especially in the context of the financial aid/fed loan aspect that would be for the most part unavailable to you for Dominican since you already have a baccalaureate degree. To satisfy stats, I took an introductory stats course at a local juco. I'm thinking USF may want an actual stats class because they don't accept substitutes for their prerequisite courses according to their FAQs on their website. I'd double check and call them especially if you've already applied. I feel somewhat confident about my application to USF, but I have gotten into a couple of other schools that were my top choices. I know USF is super competitive, so we will see. I hope they update the portals sooner rather than later because the wait is killing me.
@KO_1219 The program it self caters to my interest in what type of career I want to pursue. I really like that I can work clinical and non clinical if I were to complete this program. I believe I have certain strengths that I will be able to apply in a career as a CNL and help make a difference, even if it is on small scale.
How about yourself? What are your interests in this program?
@m3109 For me, I really like the focus on leadership through clinical care. I understand that as new grad nurses, we may be regarded in the same light as other BSN grads when searching for jobs, however, I think the CNL role is expanding and will be heavily used in due time. The role just came out within the last ten years, but several health care organizations are beginning to view them with more merit. There's data that show that CNLs make healthcare delivery more cost-effective while providing better clinical outcomes. There are hospitals that have at least one CNL on every unit, and some organizations like the VA have initiatives to hire CNLs. I also like the fact that we would also graduate with a Master's Degree. Obtaining another bachelor's degree would for the most part be financially counterproductive especially if it is through a private school due to not being able to qualify for financial aid or federal loans. In that regard, we cannot consolidate private loans and federal loans, and private loans do not qualify for any government-based loan forgiveness programs.
Also, according to another member on allnurses, rejection letters were recently sent out? So I guess that means for the folks who didn't get one, you're still in the running!!
Has anyone's portal changed online? I guess for last year's applicants, if you can view the admission decision online, it means you didn't get accepted? Per the quote...
Results are in for those who were NOT accepted. Check your application status, if it says you can view your decision online, you did not get in. I would know, because it happened to me. Good luck!
@ KO_1219 Well... I had been in touch with admissions counselor throughout the applications process via e-mail and last year I spoke on the phone with someone with regard to my grades, if I'm competitive enough, etc... When they called me to let me know my app was rejected, they said my GPA was too low (they had raised requirement pretty last minute). My SRJC gpa didn't meet the requirement and they said since I'm second degree seeking, they won't consider my UG gpa. I found nothing on their website with regard to this, nor was this ever told to me by the people with whom I had been speaking. I was, and still am, pretty annoyed by it.
With regard to stats- when I was applying I saw on their website that they accept the non-traditional types, but as I look now I see nothing stating this. Wondering if they changed it. But I haven't gotten a rejection e-mail so I guess no news is good news. This is my first round of the nursing app process and as I understand, it can take a while to get accepted anywhere! Fingers crossed.
