Hi There! I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying for USF's Non-RN MSN CNL program for Summer 2016.
Best of luck to everyone!
Hi there--sorry this is so late. My advice is pretty specific to me--but I submitted different recommendations, with the chance that they realize I have a variety; I enhanced my personal statement, and addressed some adverse circumstances (something I have never done in a personal statement). I felt that these changes paint a more accurate picture of me and will hopefully translate to the admissions committee.

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm submitting tonight, but it is good to hear any advice. I believe the personal statement and letters of rec are the determining factors. I mean, we all have passed our pre-reqs and have degrees. We are all capable people. I think choosing wisely who writes on your behalf and having a statement that's concise is key.
Good luck!
Oh wow @Sweetmemi, I didn't even think they'd already be looking at the applications yet since the app deadline just passed. Thanks for the update. I'd def take that class online if possible at a JC on the quarter system so you can take it spring quarter (march - june). Good luck on all your other apps!
Hello everyone!
Just a tad confused.. because on the FAQS page it states that the personal statement should be at least 1-3 pages long whereas on the admissions page and and informational webinar video, they both state it shoud be only 2 pages.. I'm concerned because I wrote a total of 3 pages for my PS...
@del22, I sympathize with you because I know how difficult it can be to reduce 3 pages of your life story/personal motivations into 5000 characters or 2 pages or less. My response was 2 pages, since I used my personal statement from other programs that recommended 2 pages in length. I originally was like you, I had 3 pages total, and editing a full page out of my personal statement felt like I was performing academic surgery on my life's story. But I ended up seeing that reducing it that much was worth it. I focused on how my proven actions complimented my character. It may be exciting to talk about your in vitro "wet lab" research experience, but certain things go beyond the scope of practice or expectation for the nursing profession at the moment, although if you did do research in science or medicine in lieu of volunteering or obtaining clinical experience I would have definitely written about those things especially if you became published in a respected peer reviewed journal. Writing a personal statement for nursing school is quite different from writing a personal statement for PA/MD/DO/ even JD school. There is definitely more room for personal creativity and trying to emotionally connect with the person who is reading your personal statement. For me, I tried to obtain that emotional connection, and I believe I accomplished that by the untraditional methods of volunteering and clinical experience I'm part of. Second, I maintained a tone of professional respect by validating how I envision myself giving back to the profession and its future. We often get in a tunnel vision of what we plan of getting out of the profession, but its important to consider how we plan on giving back to the profession. That last statement leaves a lot of room for personal meditation and creativity. Best of luck.

Wow thank you for that.. seems like you have covered your whole professional outlook in your PS very well...I have no problem writing a 2 page PS, but if I had known I would have done so... The USF website is a little misleading because on the FAQS page it states that our PS should be a 1-3 pages long.. That's my only concern, because I submitted 3 pages...

@dell22 I am in the same boat as you. My personal statement for USF was 3 total pages (about 6500 characters). Like yourself, I checked the FAQs, where I saw 1-3 pages as the requirement for the PS along with other important instructions on how the PS should be written... With all the changes they have been making such as the deadline being moved up two weeks, I hope they don't penalize us due to their inconsistencies on their website. I could see them penalizing for anything more than 3 pages since their website states 3 pages is okay. I'll call tomorrow and see what they say.

I believe USF's Summer Cohorts start at the end of May. I wouldn't be able to give you an exact date though, but I'm pretty sure it's around the last week of May. Good luck!
