aftonheistand 418 Posts Aug 15, 2016 Welcome @jessjo3! Im super nervous too! I wish we didn't have to wait so long to find out! The waiting will be the hardest part!
aftonheistand 418 Posts Aug 22, 2016 Ok guys, I finally hit submit on my application! It was stressful because I kept wanting to re-edit my personal statement (which I have been working on for a very long time) and realized I needed to just submit it and be done with it! Now the waiting starts. I am truly hoping the next few months fly by before we hear back. Anyone else feeling anxious/nervous? Ahhhhhh!
MursePanda 15 Posts Aug 22, 2016 I just submitted mine as well after talking with Ingrid from admissions about the final application review in pdf form. She was telling me that just fill out the application and they can see all the info properly. Issue was that it would put your prerequisite information into the wrong areas in the pdf form, but she mentioned it was only doing this because they changed their requirements midway through a cycle and the application system can only be updated like 1-2 times a year. Now to just wait......the worst part...
aftonheistand 418 Posts Aug 22, 2016 @mursepanda same thing happened on my application too! I was waiting to submit until I heard from Ingrid that everything was ok, which I heard, so I finally submitted it! The wait will be hard! Anyone want to share their stats/healthcare experience/undergrad experiences? It would be nice to know where everyone is coming from! Glad we can all talk and suffer together for now! haha
MursePanda 15 Posts Aug 22, 2016 Yea I was concerned they would think... "man this guy can't even fill out an online form properly" lolHopefully I make it in, but who knows...there are some really talented people out there! My Stats:Hometown: San Jose, CAUndegrad: SJSU - Business Administration - Focus in Finance GPA 3.297Prerequisites: Foothill College - GPA 4.0 (for the last 60 units which were all the sciences since I was a business major in undergrad)TEAS: Adjusted Individual Score 88.7%Previous Immediate Work: Insurance AdjusterVolunteer: 1 year @ Good Sam (126+ hours) in ER/Patient Services/3CV CardioI left my job to change careers and also to care for my grandmother who is 93 with progressive dementia so it became a full time job.I know from speaking with a few others who have been accepted to the BSN and CNL that GPA IS NOT the only deciding factor for sure. They have less than stellar GPA's but either wrote a great statement or clearly displayed the university's jesuit spirit (one was active in Christian Young Life and has traveled overseas to build homes/help those in need, the other came from a family of nurses and had lower GPA because of unfortunate life circumstances)Hope I stand up well to the competition! Good luck to anyone who applies!
aftonheistand 418 Posts Aug 22, 2016 Great Stats Mursepanda! You have unique experiences that they will notice for sure! Its all about setting yourself apart! Its cool that you had a career and then decided to leave and pursue nursing, that takes courage! Thank you for being so kind to share! Here are mine:Hometown: Concord, California (east bay)Undergrad: I attended University of San Francisco B.S. Biology, minor in Neuroscience with a 3.45 GPANursing Pre-reques: 4.0(I did not take the TEAS as USF is the only school I applied to this round)I have 4 years of experience as a clinical medical assistant for John Muir in Cardiology and Othopedics. I also served for the last 8 years at a restaurant. I am a young mother and have supported myself through school while working and taking care of my daughter who is now 7.Volunteer: I started about 2 years ago volunteering at UCSF corpus clinic which is a clinic serving the homeless populations in SF. I also did an Internship at Maxine Hall Health Center in SF for 1.5 years which is a primary care facility serving the richmond district in SF through the SF department of public health. I was promoted to Medical Scribe there and have been working as a medical scribe for about a year. During my time at USF I did a lot of volunteer work with ella hill hutch community center, glide SF, and such. Through my church I volunteer as a tutor in a free after school program for K through 12th graders. I also went on humanitarian aid trips to Nicaragua and Brazil to supply educational tools to orphanages. I won't bore you with the rest, but I have been very busy the last 7 years. I was originally pre-med but then after all my healthcare experiences realized my true passion is nursing, and just couldn't imagine doing anything else!! I hope to one day become a family nurse practitioner! I wish the best of luck to all of you guys! USF does not care that much about GPA. They want to know what unique circumstances qualify you to become a nurse and serve the community you enter. Its nice to know that this program looks at more than just numbers, because I truly feel like the good nurses do not have to be book smart, but rather compassionate with amazing people skills and the ability to work hard and adapt quickly to situations. We got this!!!! :)
MursePanda 15 Posts Aug 22, 2016 @aftonheistand Hats off to you for the hard work being a mother, student, employee, and volunteer! I have got to say you have a great list of things that would definitely make you stand out of the crowd! I wished that I could have done an overseas trip to help others; sounds like a really awesome and eye opening experience. I had a good friend who was a nurse @ Good Sam who did her trip to Peru, unfortunately the scheduling and timing didn't work out so well on my end. Best of luck!
aks92 28 Posts Aug 31, 2016 Hey guys! I'm joining this forum because I can't stand waiting alone. I kept making little changes to my application and finally submitted yesterday. Anyways, I'm now in the same boat as you all.....just waiting. Have a good rest of your week and good luck!
aftonheistand 418 Posts Aug 31, 2016 Welcome @aks92!! So nice to have another person join us! I did the same thing, kept changing things, then realized I needed to stop and just submit already! The waiting is the worst. I am a Type-A planner, and the fact that I have no idea what life will bring come Jan is freaking me out! Tell US about yourself! Background, etc? Everyday I think the waiting will get better but it eventually consumes my thoughts about whether I will hear good news or bad from USF! EKKKKKKKK!
aks92 28 Posts Aug 31, 2016 Sure @aftonheistand! I have a degree in child development with a focus on social and community settings. For a year I worked with autistic children, providing ABA services in their homes/schools. Working with children on the spectrum is what really motivated me to pursue nursing. Now, I volunteer in the ER at St. Luke's while working on my last pre-requisite, physiology. I agree, the decisions will be life changing. I try to avoid thinking about it because I don't want to get my hopes up!
MursePanda 15 Posts Sep 1, 2016 hmmm... What happened to that post from a current student warning of issues with the USF program? wonder why it got deleted...Although it seemed very similar to what another person I spoke in great depth with about the program as well. (when they completed it back in 2008) The CNL program doesn't focus as hard on the core BSN knowledge which is vital to pass NCLEX, the CNL masters theory info has no play in the licensure portion and apparently detracts from the fundamentals of nursing. The other thing that was quite alarming actually from the info session that matched that "missing" post was that USF no longer does preceptorship; something that almost all programs usually have and make a big difference in working live/networking for jobs once we approach the end of the program.I don't know if anyone else attended the info session recently in person, but it was quite alarming for me to hear that and they didn't have a clear answer to why other than "our partners have scheduling issues". This seemed a bit odd considering their partners also partner with other majors schools like SMU and that program still does preceptorships..They did mention they were in talks again to restart, but it would not be for this upcoming term but perhaps a few cycles later from now.Anyone else hear otherwise?
