USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

Published

I know I am jumping on this topic early but is anyone else excited about the upcoming ability to apply to USF? Lets get to know each other! Share a little about yourself. We can also talk about the application process, writing sample, gpa, facts/things you have heard, concerns/thoughts, other schools your applying, ect.

Lets get a conversation going! Go bulls!!

Do you have to be registered for a course to take the two Canvas courses? I tried doing Academic Integrity this morning, but it would not allow me.

Yes, you have to complete the orientation and have your immunization records accepted before you can register for any classes. Go into Oasis, go to student, then to student records there you will see "View Holds" to see what you may need. I believe once you do the orientation the 2 Canvas course/tests appear.

Wow --- I had no idea that this was an option. Thank you so much!!! That is definitely what I will plan to do. Like I said, I had planned to only apply to accelerated programs given the fact I have my BA already. In fact, towards the end of my degree program, my main motivation for finishing was to get my BA so I could apply to the ABSN program. However, I started getting freaked out when I looked at the curriculum and saw it was the exact same as the traditional, but just accelerated. That may sound silly, but some accelerated programs have different curriculum than the traditional.

Also, I found the override form and am about to email my "in progress" final prerequisite classes right now to get permission for Patho. I'm not sure if I will do it or not as it's a long drive and in the middle of the day, but we shall see.

I didn't know it was an option either. That's what I get for never going to an information session! :banghead: Luckily it didn't hurt me, as I was accepted to the ABSN which is the only one I applied to. I knew someone who applied to both, got second degree (which she didn't want) and was able to move to accelerated in her second semester, but chose not to. So even if you get second degree, it is possible to move up if a seat opens up since everyone takes the same classes for the first semester (at least they did when I attended, things could change. Always double check).

Don't be scared. It's do-able if you're very dedicated. I don't know anyone who flunked out, although some de-celerated, but it was usually by choice. If you have a poor attendance record for clinical, they'll de-celerate you whether you want it or not. Be punctual!

My goal is to become an ARNP, so it's crucial I do well in the program to prepare for and get good grades for applying to a graduate program eventually.

With that being said, do you have any other advice for me? :)

Greetings, everyone! I'm excited that it's almost time to apply for USF's Summer term ABSN program. I'm a non-traditional student (i.e., old guy with a wife and 5 awesome kids) coming into a mid-life career change but very excited to be here. This week I finished my last pre-req (Microbiology), and it was by God's grace that I have managed a 4.0 in all of them. (My overall GPA is 3.82.) Of course 40% rides on our essays, competition is tight, and there are no guarantees.

I too had considered applying to both programs (ABSN, Upper Division). However, I received conflicting information about whether applying to both might skew my chances toward one of the two programs. I really prefer the 2nd degree ABSN program, but one of the advisors thought that applying to both might open me up to the possibility that the evaluators would push me in one direction or the other. On another occasion, a different advisor wrote me, "The evaluation process is separate for each sequence. Generally, your application will be evaluated for each program’s applicant pool." In the end, I was unsure what to believe, so I decided to pursue only the ABSN for Summer. If it doesn't work out, I'll apply to both programs for Fall.

BTW, one bit of helpful advice that she did share: "If admitted into the Upper Division program, generally we will not allow students to go into the Second Degree Sequence." This is why I'm leaning toward applying solely to the ABSN sequence.

Yeah, it is a matter of if there's space. Our clinicals are so limited because there's a nursing school on every corner in Tampa.

The ABSN is hard work, but many of us get through it. Throughout the program, we had heads of different NP programs speak to us, and try to recruit us. They are really impressed by the ABSN, they told us we are the top students, and we are typically very successful at the next level. If you want to move up to grad school in USF, they'll be more impressed by the ABSN.

I don't plan on getting an NP in FL because I don't like the limits they have on NP's, so I haven't looked into it much further.

Study groups! I did so much better on the tests when I had a study buddy or group to bounce concepts off of. There are some study rooms downstairs that are great to use.

I am also applying to the traditional BSN program for summer and fall 2015! I am really nervous since this is my first choice. I have a pretty good GPA but still heard that there are barely any spots since a lot of kids already have a guaranteed spot in the CARE program. Hopefully my essay will stand out. What are everyones GPA's?

Hey everyone! Just thought I would finally join in on the conversation... I applied a month ago but still have not heard the official word back from the University which doesn't seem to be uncommon based upon the past forums so I'm not freaking out just yet, haha. Zaraled, where did you hear that the CARE program is taking up most of the spots for the summer? If that is true, that really stinks :/ At least they have a fall option too!

In the orientation the adviser states the school's previous 2014 cohort accepted 10 V-CARE out of 12 available positions and now is looking to accept 24 V-CARE students into the 2015 program. However, that does not guarantee they will get that many students applying for the program.

As someone who is now in the 4th semester of the second degree nursing program, the best advice I can give is to record lectures and DO NOT wait until the last minute to study....start studying the material as soon as you learn it in class.

wow, I was totally unaware of that. Thanks for letting us know! How many people do they accept for the summer? I am having a hard time finding that information on their website...

And nrdortch, thanks for the advice! That is definitely helpful. How do you like USF?
