USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

U.S.A. Florida

I know I am jumping on this topic early but is anyone else excited about the upcoming ability to apply to USF? Lets get to know each other! Share a little about yourself. We can also talk about the application process, writing sample, gpa, facts/things you have heard, concerns/thoughts, other schools your applying, ect.

Lets get a conversation going! Go bulls!!

Today I received my permit to take pathophysiology at USF; I am so excited, one step closer to my goal.

Hey, everyone! I was going to be an accelerated applicant, but have decided to pursue the upper-level sequence. I am surprised that there are not more posts on this board as the application is opening up so soon! I would post my stats as I assume everyone else on here is obsessed with comparing themselves like me, but I am not sure how to do my prereq. GPA.

So, here is my question: Which classes are counted towards are prerequisite GPA? I always thought it was the following (these are copied straight from the second-degree sequence page):

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I (4) BSC 2085/L
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4) BSC 2086/L
  • Any three credit class in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or Physics (3) - (CHMXXXX, BCHXXXX, BSCXXXX, PHYXXXX, or PCBXXXX)
  • Life Span (Human Growth and Development) (3) - DEP 2004
  • Human Nutrition (3) - HUN 2201
  • Microbiology with lab (4) - MCB 2000/L
  • Statistics (3) STA 2122
  • Psychology (3) (PSYXXXX, SYGXXXX, or SOPXXXX)

However, on the Upper Division Sequence website (Admission Requirements - Upper Division - USF Health - Tampa, Florida), the following are posted:

  • English Composition I and II (6) ENC 1101 and ENC 1102
  • Gordon Rule Math (Algebra or Finite Math preferred) (3) - MAC 1105 or MGF 1106
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I (4) BSC 2085/L
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology II (4) BSC 2086/L
  • Any three credit class in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or Physics (3) - (CHMXXXX, BCHXXXX, BSCXXXX, PHYXXXX, or PCBXXXX)
  • Life Span (Human Growth and Development) (3) - DEP 2004
  • Human Nutrition (3) - HUN 2201
  • Microbiology with lab (4) - MCB 2000/L
  • Statistics (3) STA 2122
  • Psychology (3) (PSYXXXX, SYGXXXX, or SOPXXXX)

I have already been accepted to USF and on DegreeWorks, it's showing the first set (without the ENC 1101/1102, etc.) as the prerequisite classes that are used. Can anyone clarify?

Hello, I am to surprised that people are not discussing anything pertaining to USF, I hope that is a good thing. Anyhow, the courses you see on DegreeWorks are what they use to determine your prerequisites GPA along with the overall. I believe the reason you see an ENG prerequisite requirement on the upper division sequence and not on the second degree is that for someone to have a bachelors degree they had to have completed a a minimum number of writing courses. Whereas in the upper division one can have 60 credits and have not met the Gordon Rule of writing.

Thank you so much for clarifying!

I can't believe how dead this board is. Maybe there are a bunch of lurkers or just not many applicants :)

Let's hope for the latter . . . :)

Regardless, I was excited to see someone posted a reply already this morning. I went ahead and sent a message to the CON just to get clarification about that. Are you applying as an Upper Division student, too? What do you mean when you say you are applying to summer and fall? As in you will apply to fall in case you are not accepted into the summer program?

I hope the reason that no one is writing is a direct correlation to no one applying, which can only benefit us. I am applying to the upper division this January and if I do not get accepted I will apply again for the fall. Are you taking the upcoming Patho class?

I was not planning to take Patho, although I would definitely like to. I live about an hour and 15 minutes from Tampa, so it's not very practical for me. Do you know if it is offered online? If so, then I would definitely want to take it. Also, does it have to be taken at USF? If not, then I will probably go ahead and look to see where it's offered online in general. I live in Citrus County and USF is the closest university to me. The local college here is pretty small and doesn't offer too many courses.

I just did the math and my overall GPA should be either a 3.78 or 3.79 once my grades for this fall term post (I just finished an 8-week long nutrition course and have two weeks left of microbiology and A&P 2) and my prerequisite GPA will be 3.93. I've been quite busy, so have been putting off the essay for now, but know I need to start working on mine. Have you done yours yet? Also, are you going to go ahead and do an orientation? I tried looking for one online, but did not see any summer ones posted yet. I am getting married at the end of March and will be out of the country from March 28 - April 2 and then going on our honeymoon from April 22 - April 30, so I want to try to go ahead and preemptively do the USF orientation to knock it out in case my schedule doesn't allow me to if I do get accepted!

Hey, you live right above me, I live in Spring Hill, Hernando County, how far are you from Spring Hill? When I spoke with my adviser, she highly recommended to take their patho and get it out of the way, she even went as far as saying that from previous history, student who received an A in their patho class were usually given seats in the program. However, that would only apply to me in the fall due to me being in the class at the same time they are evaluating summer admittance applications. So if I was not to gain admittance in the summer, if I get an A, I surely would gain admittance in the fall.

I have no plans on putting all my eggs in one basket, so I am currently in a Patho class at South University and was told by my adviser at USF that they do not accept any other universities Patho course and it is not offered online, and only during the spring and summer semesters.

Yes, I completed my essay and have been tweaking it here and there every chance I get. I also did my orientation this past summer, its an all day ordeal that is very informative, I also did the 2 required Canvas courses on Academic integrity, and Life skills for transfer students.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and your awesome GPA.

Can you give me the email for the contact to get the override for the Patho course? I think I may go ahead and try to get into one depending on how many days a week/what time it is given the fact I will be working full-time and have to commute.

What are the two required canvas courses? Are these USF admittance classes (pardon my ignorance)?

Thank you for the congratulations :) Next step is focusing on getting into a program!

There is no override, you need to go to the USF college of Nursing page, once there on the top right side of the page you will see a "Student Resource tab", click it, then scroll down to where it says "Course Permit Request". From there follow the directions, make sure to check off the pre-nursing box, (NOT the upper division). For the spring semester, the class is only on Mon & Thur from 9-10:40am

Yes, I was referring to those admittance informative question things that one can keep retaking until you score a 90 or better.

Hey, everyone! I was going to be an accelerated applicant, but have decided to pursue the upper-level sequence.

You can apply to both. If ABSN is too much, you just meet with your advisor to drop down to second degree. I knew a few students who did that. I'd apply to both to maximize my chances if I were you.

Wow --- I had no idea that this was an option. Thank you so much!!! That is definitely what I will plan to do. Like I said, I had planned to only apply to accelerated programs given the fact I have my BA already. In fact, towards the end of my degree program, my main motivation for finishing was to get my BA so I could apply to the ABSN program. However, I started getting freaked out when I looked at the curriculum and saw it was the exact same as the traditional, but just accelerated. That may sound silly, but some accelerated programs have different curriculum than the traditional.

Also, I found the override form and am about to email my "in progress" final prerequisite classes right now to get permission for Patho. I'm not sure if I will do it or not as it's a long drive and in the middle of the day, but we shall see.

Did you have to complete your USF orientation before registering?
