USF BSN & ABSN Hopefuls Summer 2015

U.S.A. Florida

I know I am jumping on this topic early but is anyone else excited about the upcoming ability to apply to USF? Lets get to know each other! Share a little about yourself. We can also talk about the application process, writing sample, gpa, facts/things you have heard, concerns/thoughts, other schools your applying, ect.

Lets get a conversation going! Go bulls!!

I am also excited and looking forward to applying to USF nursing program this January 2015 for summer admittance. I actually have my orientation for the school itself this coming Wednesday and cannot wait to get my school ID.

I do not know how true this is, but I read that as long as you get permission from the nursing department, one can take the nursing pathophysiology class before entering the actual program. Would you happen to know if this is true? As for my GPA, I have a 3.74 on the prerequisites and an overall of 3.82. I hope this is competitive enough for the program.

I also plan on applying at South University, however I am not really keen on having to take an English 3 class in the fall, but I do not want to put all my eggs in one basket. Are you planning on applying to any other schools?

Yup, as a pre-nursing student you can take patho in the spring semester (with a special voucher). I think they offer it in the fall but when I try to look up the registration information it says it is restricted to the accepted nursing students only. I plan to take patho Spring 2015 so I will see you there!

I am looking into other schools but not 100% sure where I want to apply. UCF is my alma mater for my 1st bachelors but they require the TEAS. Not to mention I just got married 6 months ago and we just bought a house in Tampa so it would be inconvenient to go somewhere outside of Tampa. I might apply to FSU, as their requirements are similar to USF but its so far away! I know what you mean by putting all your eggs in one basket! Some of the private schools, like South University or UT are so expensive in comparison too!

Congratulations and recently getting married. Yes, UCF is very far, before I moved to the Tampa area last year, I lived about 20 minutes away from UCF and had intentions on going to school there. From what I have seen online, UT is far more expensive and has a better reputation than South University. However my options are limited between the South and USF, I just really hope I get into USF.

Did my college orientation today at USF, along with meeting an academic adviser for the college of nursing; and although she was pleasant, I still feel concerned that I might not get in if my essay is not up to par. I do not like writing requirements, especially when they carry a significant of weight. As a result of it being far to subjective and dependent on an individual who might have personal bias. I feel nervous now!

Agreed. I am very nervous about USF because they are extrememly competative and my first choice! You should feel confident though, your GPA is higher than mine. I think right now have a 3.64 overall (not including the 2 summer classes I just finished) and I would estimate a 3.5 pre-req (I still have 2 to go for the fall; unfortunatly I got a C the first time I took A&P 8 years ago and just re-did it without a problem but they look at first attempts so my pre-req GPA will be low). I actually like that they value the essay so much because I feel that is my only leg up over the competition because I work in the medical field, very involved in the community and have an advanced degree. I started a rough draft but its so hard to include everything you want to say and it still flow nicely. I want to bring mine to the writing center in the future because I hear they will offer advice on the essay. From previous USF BSN students I have been told to just be honest and speak from the heart; they will see your passion in your writing.

I am happy that you think my GPA is good, however I do not share your confidence in my GPA. Statistically, out of the 400 to 600 applicants who I read that apply to USF there has to be a large number of applicants who have a higher GPA than I do, and being they only accept roughly 40 to 50 students, it appears that my essay would have to really stand out. So with that in mind, I feel terrified due to this type of essay being so subjective. I want to be optimistic but after yesterday's orientation, I feel more afraid than ever.

It's true on the essay speak from your heart and do your best to show your passion in your writing! Very best of luck to you guys!

Medic6758- that GPA is competitive. Last I knew patho was open to non-nursing admitted students, space permitting (which is why you need to get a waiver). Talk to the non-admitted pre-nursing advisor to get a permit.

I graduate USF with my accelerated BSN next week. It was the hardest thing I ever did. Hopefully, it'll be worth it. I have to warn you, though: there are few new grad jobs in the Tampa area. You can't count on getting a job in the hospital you do clinical at. Pay is horrible at $21 an hour, considering the cost of living down here. I'm looking for a job out of state with either better pay or better cost of living.

I just finished my first semester of the second degree nursing program at usf and I have to agree it is the hardest thing I've ever done. While gpa is important a good essay is also key to getting into the program.

Hi everyone! This will be my second time applying for the ABSN program. I applied in May and was placed on the alternate list, was offered a spot but did not respond in time (due to my summer job limiting daily use of technology). Hopefully I will have better luck/timing this time around! Since the last application cycle I have become a CNA so i'm hoping that will have a positive affect on my application.

Good luck on your application. I too will be applying to USF for both the summer and fall BSN program.
