USF 2014 applicants?

Published

Just wondering if there are any USF applicants out there? I had a couple questions :)

That is awesome @jemcvay ! Congrats on your third and final child !(:

I think you have a veryyyy good chance of getting in especially since you were an alternate last time ! Much luck to you! (:

How is everyone feeling about their applications? This is pretty much the next step in my life, and I am really nervous!

This is also the next step in my life & I'm sooo ready !

I'm feel good with my application. I always feel like I can do better. I started working on my essay around October and I worked on it whenever I felt the need to write. So I would be super bummed if I didn't get in because I put so much time into the essay. And my GPA is good but not amazinggg. I believe my overall is a 3.54 and my pre req is a 3.7. I'm currently taking classes in the Molecular & Microbiology program at UCF to raise my GPA.

How is do you feel about your application ?!

I feel that my gpa is good (pre req 4.0, overall 3.8) but my essay can go either way. The gpa are concrete scores, it's easy to know where you stand with those. The essay is another story, you don't really know if the admissions will like it or not. I tried to keep my essay honest, interesting, and use less pronouns/use good grammar as I can. All I can do is hope at this point. I've never been a good writer so I know if anything my essay won't be my strongest point.

My GPA isn't the greatest I have a 3.48 Overall and a 3.2 Pre-Req. I worked full-time and course loaded 18 credit hours each semester (totally regret it), but I had to do what I had to do. I put a lot of heart into my essay so I am hoping my grades can be overlooked.

From what i had read in past years forums it is really hard to make any predictions - i've read about people with 3.7-3.8 not getting in. I suppose it's because the essay has such a big weight. I did my best with it - like everyone else i suppose, but i know it is so subjective whether someone reading it likes it or not. Especially that there's no "criteria" by which to go. Anyway, I was wondering does the overall GPA include the pre-requiste courses or is it strictly the undergrad GPA? My GPA on degreeworks includes pre-reqs so i always assumed that was the overall GPA but now i have doubts.

I believe my essay is really great and my overall gpa too but my pre req isn't as good because I as well worked all through college anywhere from 30-60 hours a week plus a full 15-18 credit/semester course load. I look back now and ask myself how in the world I did it! Haha but I think it makes me a better applicant than if I didn't work and got a perfect gpa because I have great work ethic and determination! I think we all sound like great applicants and I wish everyone luck!!!

REALLY good GPAs all around for everyone ! That's awesome ! If you mentioned in your essay how you worked full-time or just mentioned a typical day I think they would understand and see that you are able to balance a lot at once ! (:

@AgaSJ undergrad GPA is the same as overall GPA which should include your pre req classes too & then pre req is strictly the classes they mentioned on their website.

Thanks for clarifying that. I've been thinking about they actually "score" each applicant. We know that overall GPA and the pre-reqs GPA each are given 30% of the score and essay - 40%. So I thought that if you take your pre-reqs GPA and divide it by 4.0 and the multiply the result by 0.3 and then do the same with overall GPA. Then let's say that on a scale of 0 to 1 you'd give yourself 0.8 for essay (your subjective score) and multiply that by 0.4. Then add all three "scores" you'd have your overall score.

For instance for someone with 3.8 overall GPA and 3.9 pre-reqs GPA and say they feel they're essay is great (but maybe not perfect) - 0.9 score, the overall outcome would be:

(3.8/4.0)x 0.3 + (3.9/4.0)x 0.3 + 0.9x 0.4= 0.285+0.2925 +0.36= 0.9375

or on a 0 to 100 scale - 93.75

once they have the combined "score" they can rank the candidates and accept the top 40 (or however many they admit)

Does that make sense? or am I going mad? :)

Does anyone have any idea how I would figure out my pre req GPA since both a and p and micro As will not count (not first attempt)? One will be a W and one a FX(dropped late) I know I was an alternate in 2012 but I have no clue how they figured my gpa:(

Do you have access to DegreeWorks on Oasis? If so your grades will be posted there - you can see which grades they take.

Thanks so much! It says All attempt gpa 3.19, applied attempts gpa 3.65 and usf system attempts gpa 3.73. I am guessing it is the 3.19 but please say it isn't so! :/
