I have found other threads for previous programs very helpful so I thought I would start one for the new program so that we can talk about it.
So I applied the first day apps opened & am in the process of preparing to send my supplementary stuff. In the personal statement it asks to list your two units of interest and why. I called to ask them if they wanted a general response (like 'med/surg') or to be more specific (like 'med/surg ortho'). They said to be specific. My problem is I don't know all the units. Does anyone know the different units that may (or may not) be hiring new grads?
Also, do you think it would be too far-fetched to choose the ER as one of my units of choice? I ask this because in my job search I have learned that ER new grad positions are extremely competitive & often times the positions available are given to internal applicants only or people with some other kind of "in." All my training, experience, and certifications that I have acquired have been in preparation for ER nursing... So I believe that I am qualified, but I don't want to shoot for something that is impossible & miss out on a position in a less competitive unit.
What do you think?
Aww sorry to hear that =\ !! Well maybe if L&D/PP is really your unit of choice, then you may not even enjoy USC (since they don't have those available). But if you are interested in other units (check out For our patients. Fight On. | Nurses of USC if you haven't already), you can always apply again for their summer/next program!! I do wish USC really had more departments but at present they're really a "specialty" hospital, as the recruiter described it. Good luck on the rest of your applications!!
Thank you Vanessa. You are very kind. I wish you luck with USC.
According to the timeline, USC should be contacting and interviewing selected candidates during November 22-December 17, ... Expect to get a call soon, though! It's only a matter of days :)
Calls and interviews are about to start! Good luck to everyone who applied :). And for those who are lucky enough to get called/interviewed/etc., please share your experiences! Looks like we have a very supportive community here

@passionlove and tomato head [and everyone else]:
I spoke to ------ today, one of the nurse managers at USCUH, while volunteering and she gave me some interesting news:
I'm not exactly sure regarding the extent of her involvement with the Versant program. I do know she is a manager for the 4th floor ICU's. I'm sure she is working on collaboration with the recruiters and other managers as well--so this information is simply what she shared with me.
At this rate, it seems like calls may not be made until after Thanksgiving! So if you don't receive a call for a couple days, rest assured that they will eventually come...
Hope this helps! Happy Thanksgiving (in advance) and good luck to all :)
Wow! I thought my boyfriend was exaggerating when he told me that USC is only going to hire 10 new grads. That's sad. He also told me that about 80 names were forwarded to the unit manager(s) to select for interviews (I think it's for all of the units, but I could be wrong. It could be just for the unit I applied to).
And btw, yes, they did hire a lot of new grads the last time. I was told that 40 were hired for the Dec. 200 cohort. They didn't really hire anyone last Spring. And now, there's only 10 slots.

I spoke to ------ today, one of the nurse managers at USCUH, while volunteering and she gave me some interesting news:
- USC received about 850 applicants for their New Grad program
- HOWEVER, around 400 of those applications were "incomplete" (meaning, other documents such as personal statement or letters of reference, etc., were not submitted)
- Therefore, around 400+ applications will be reviewed for consideration
- No calls have yet been made to candidates at this time
- In fact, she pointed to a large stack of papers as she mentioned "This is a stack of New Grad applications. I will be taking them with me and reading them during my plane trip...[for Thanksgiving]"
- She also mentioned that "We will only be taking 10 this year. Last time, we took too many" (I'm not quite sure what she meant by "too many". Also, I've heard other numbers from recruiters of about 10-15, but perhaps they really decided to cut down...)
I'm not exactly sure regarding the extent of her involvement with the Versant program. I do know she is a manager for the 4th floor ICU's. I'm sure she is working on collaboration with the recruiters and other managers as well--so this information is simply what she shared with me.
