USC New Grad Program 2011

Published

I have found other threads for previous programs very helpful so I thought I would start one for the new program so that we can talk about it.

So I applied the first day apps opened & am in the process of preparing to send my supplementary stuff. In the personal statement it asks to list your two units of interest and why. I called to ask them if they wanted a general response (like 'med/surg') or to be more specific (like 'med/surg ortho'). They said to be specific. My problem is I don't know all the units. Does anyone know the different units that may (or may not) be hiring new grads?

Also, do you think it would be too far-fetched to choose the ER as one of my units of choice? I ask this because in my job search I have learned that ER new grad positions are extremely competitive & often times the positions available are given to internal applicants only or people with some other kind of "in." All my training, experience, and certifications that I have acquired have been in preparation for ER nursing... So I believe that I am qualified, but I don't want to shoot for something that is impossible & miss out on a position in a less competitive unit.

What do you think?

Thanks, njinga413. I did get one email from HR when they misplaced (?) one of my documents. Has anyone heard if it matters if you are one of the first to submit the application?

I turned in my app the day it was due. I asked HR if it matters if I turned it in so late. HR replied no, they will give everyone a chance and will look at all apps. But I really do think that it does matter conure girl that you submitted early bc maybe HR will get too tired to look to hundreds and hundreds of applications so they will only considered the ones that they look at. Hey, at least HR knew they lost one of your documents.

I do think that it does matter with UCLA when you submit your apps.

I emailed all of my supplemental documents as attachments. Did anyone get a confirmation that they were received that did the same, or do we just have to have faith that they got there alright. I am starting to wish I had called to make sure they were received. Conure girl... did they only email you bc they had misplaced the document?

They emailed me that they got my documents.. I did some at attachments

Yes, I was only contacted because she couldn't locate one of the documents that she knew I had sent with my application

I sent my documents to them and called them a week later to follow up and she told me and also emailed me she received my documents.

I emailed everything in with the pertinent attachments and I received a quick email saying they received everything. The wait and worry is the worst part of applying to these programs but you gotta keep the faith, to keep the sanity. Good luck everybody!

You probably already know by now, but I hope no one requested ER as your unit of choice! USC does NOT have an Emergency department, Pediatrics, nor OB/GYN departments. They are a specialty hospital that works closely with the County hospital near by (which has the ER).

I've spoken to recruiters saying they frequently receive applications with beautiful essays about these areas of choice--which USC University Hospital does NOT offer--and they "can tell that the applicant doesn't know much about USCUH".

Hope no one made that mistake!! Good luck to everyone! :)

Aww sorry to hear that =\ !! Well maybe if L&D/PP is really your unit of choice, then you may not even enjoy USC (since they don't have those available). But if you are interested in other units (check out For our patients. Fight On. | Nurses of USC if you haven't already), you can always apply again for their summer/next program!! I do wish USC really had more departments but at present they're really a "specialty" hospital, as the recruiter described it. Good luck on the rest of your applications!! :nurse:

According to the timeline, USC should be contacting and interviewing selected candidates during November 22-December 17, so most likely no one has heard from them yet. Expect to get a call soon, though! It's only a matter of days :)
