USAGPAN 2022

Published

This topic is to help those interested in applying for usagpan 2022. (Us army graduate program in anesthesia nursing). I was recently selected to attend in 2021 and I am a recruiter, so I have a unique perspective on this process and I would like to help.

First things first: Do it!! APPLY!

I already feel so confident in the decision that I made to accept my offer to this program and I'm only just getting started. Right now, us direct accession students are at DCC learning the Army ins and outs & while I'm not sure everyone would admit it right off the bat, we are having a blast! We're eatin' MREs, lodging in 5-star barracks and perfecting our recitation of the Soldier's Creed (so we don't have to keep doing pushups LOL). As a group, going through all this training together has given us the opportunity to form some amazing relationships with each other now before we even start our anesthesia courses. In a few weeks we will meet more classmates attending BOLC with us back at Fort Sam, and then our Active Duty & VA friends will come in June- and we cannot wait to get the real party started once we're all together!

The program's leadership team and classmates in cohorts above us have already extended a warm welcome to us all and I can tell that the next three years we will be in dang good hands. In short, if you desire to attend a program unlike any other, that will train you to the FULL scope of your role as an anesthesia provider & train you to perform under any circumstance with any amount of resource, I truly cannot recommend this program enough. From one stoked-to-be-on-this-journey Army soldier to a future one reading from across the screen, we can't wait to have you join the family. HOOAH! ??

Hello all,

I am currently in the process of applying for the 2022 cohort as well. This forum is an extremely valuable resource for those of us navigating the process. Thank you to all of those that are willing to give back by answering questions and helping us gain more information along the way. I have a couple of questions that I cannot seem to find a direct answer on.

-If accepted to the program, what is the timeline that orders are cut and you relocate to Ft. Sam? Does the new Army board date affect this? I've heard December/January, but don't have anything concrete to go on.

-My CCRN certification has been expired for several years, but I currently hold the CFRN and CEN certifications. Do these two certifications carry any weight with acceptance to the program that you know of?

Many thanks in advance. I look forward to interacting with you all along the way.

Hey AJG! Excited to have others on here actively applying for the next cohort with me. I hope we all get to meet next class! So as far as it stands now (can’t speak on the board moving up since this is new, but that just seemed like a decision to leave more time for logistics), you report to Fort Sam for DCC and BOLC and that all runs from about January through March 2022 in our cases. As I understand, you do not need to have a place and be living over there just yet. School wouldn’t start until around June, so all the moving and stuff like that happens in those months between DCC/BOLC and program start. I’m sure MikeyD can elaborate on that timeline further. On your second question, I remember reading I believe on the website that CCRN and CEN are both preferred so it seems you should be fine with CEN even though the CCRN is expired. Please, anyone that can confirm/deny/elaborate, please do. Hope to get this forum fired up as it’s mid-February and things will be getting very real for this cycle very soon!

This is all correct. The timeline is the same for applicants even with the board moving forward (during no-covid report around late January). This will fix issues with orders having to be cut instantly or other issues that occur.
All certifications are optional. So if you have any that’s good ??

EEJ and MikeyD,

Thank you both so much for the replies. The information really does help and I appreciate it very much. I'm looking forward to the process and definitely hoping for the opportunity to meet you all next class as well! Not sure where you're located EEJ, but stay warm down there in Texas MikeyD!!

MikeyD,

When you say that army boards are 13-15 July does that mean that all prerequisites have to be completed by that time? Or does Orgo and GRE have to be completed and submitted by the Baylor application deadline of 1 August?

Not sure if it will change for you guys next year, but we actually reported 08JAN21 to Fort Sam Houston, moved in and then left for a month of training at Fort Sill (DCC) then came back for BOLC here at Fort Sam. We were not authorized a hotel room on base for BOLC because we had already signed into our unit here (USAGPAN) and therefore are considered permanent party. It actually ended up being nice that way... we get to stay in the comfort of our homes for everything (aside from FTX of course) ?

The board has moved up 2 months. It is now in July so you would want to talk to a recruiter ASAP and make sure you are aligning with the application timeline.

I am currently working with a recruiter and have my conditional release from the reserves.  My Science and overall GPA is greater than 3.5.  I have my CCRN, CEN, CFRN, CPEN CTRN and TCRN.  I  took my gre today and got a 293.  I thought I was going to do better.  I am wondering if the gre is a significant factor in the decision making?  I alreadt plan to retake.  Any other feedback would be great.  Thank you.

I have just started the process for applying for the program and hope to be accepted and start in 2023.

I am prior service Army as a 68WM6. I currently have a 4.0 GPA and will take the GRE at the beginning of 2022. I have 5 years ICU experience in a TSICU and I have my CCRN. I enrolled in the ICCOC OChem class but was told it would not make my application competitive since it is a freshman level school. Any words of advice for which organic/biochem class to take?

Yes, you must get a 300/3.5 however getting over that from my experience is not a huge factor. You just have to meet the standard. (I got a 302/3.5 ??‍♂️, nothing special).

I don’t have a list or anything but I used university of New England online and took medical biochemistry I. It was a good course though a smidge pricey. I wish I had even taken the second course as well because of how relevant the content is.

Hey all, just wanted to make an introduction as well. I am starting the application process for 2022. I served in a variety of roles, beginning in the infantry as an enlisted Soldier and ending 9 years of active duty in 2017 as a BN Medical Operations Officer. I'm am still in the reserves (13 total years in) and am a BDE MEDO for a reserve aviation unit. Also currently a CPT for almost 3 years

I completed an Accelerated BSN with a 4.0 last year and by time of application will have 18 months or so of experience in the MICU. I also plan to take my CCRN if at all possible prior to application submission.

I am painfully familiar with AMEDD as a whole, so please feel free to ask me any questions. The one caveat is that 100 percent of my experience has been in the operational army and never in a MEDDAC (a stationary hospital unit). I look forward to applying/working with all of you and hope we get a chance to be a part of the Army anesthesia team.
