USA RN to Canada

I will be trying to do this in the future. I was wondering from anyone who has done this how hard it was for you to accomplish and if the gov't made it any easier on you because of how hard up Ca. is for Nurses especially in small towns.

I've worked with American nurses who haven't found the work different. Just the drug names.

Read the stickies for the "how to do it" stuff.

Right now, the provincial health authorities aren't recruiting offshore due to cutbacks. The emphasis is hire locally educated nurses first.

When you say you you are a USRN, are you American educated and employed or an IEN who has passed the NCLEX?

Well first I meant how the actual paperwork and effort and time was to do it. I am not an RN yet but can get a job easily in my local hospital when I am finished. I am also a Canadian citizen. I will have passed the NCLEX and worked for a year before I try to write the Canadian version.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

Right now I don't know of any areas that are hard up for nurses.I live in a small town and there are definitely no nursing jobs here.

and you are doing a degree? It's the entry point for RNs up here.

Still off topic lol, but I know of a lot of small towns that are, including my own and the three surrounding it. Getting a job is not a problem. I can get one for sure hen i am done. Now back to the original topic please.

yes a degree plus some specialization.

Lori lives in small town Ontario. Trust me, she knows her job market. Ontario, like Alberta is having a hard time finding work for their new grads. BC isn't doing much better.

Only really specialized, experienced IENs have any chance of work in the forseeable future.

I am sure your right although still off topic.....in Ontario. I am from BC. I know who does the hiring at the local hospitals. I know the job market here. Now enough of this lol. Back to the original topic.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

Excuse me for interjecting here, but YOU opened the door with your remark about Canadain towns being hard up for nurses. It's very nice that you know who does the hiring in the town you're from, but that person has little or no control over whether vacant positions are filled. BC is struggling with budget issues, has a new and very green premier and a huge deficit. Hospitals all over the province have been laying off or leaving vacancies vacant. The BC government is NOT going to make it easier for you to swoop in and get a job when there are people who live there now who can't find work.

Sorry but no. Why is it on this forum people want any excuse to voice their opinion on any subject which does not relate in any way to the original topic? I am a member of many boards and people normally would be kicked out of the convo long before now.

Now seeing as you brought it up and I suppose we will never get to the original subject I will inform you that you are 100% wrong. There ARE small towns hiring all over BC and almost ALL of them are hard up for nurses. I never said that every frickin town was looking or hiring though did I? I have family and friends in the biz(all over this great province). Some do the hiring, some staffing and some work as Nurses, so please hold off on your self righteousness and defense of utter disregard of what I actually wanted to know.

You forget that I am Canadian also, not some international citizen. Yes I do know the person in charge of hiring, my mother does the staffing and my wife currently works there as well. I have been asked to complete school as soon as humanly possible so they can hire me. Why this has any bearing on what my ORIGINAL question was is beyond me. Keep posting these inane and utterly useless replies please they are really relevant and helpful.

Also anyone without any experience with what i originally posted and nothing pertaining to it, refrain from posting. Pretty simple.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
