I am a US educated RN with an Associates Degree and was seeking my RN license to work in Australia. I have received my license to practice in Australia and just wanted to give information to anyone else going down the same road. I am an Australian Citizen who completed my nursing training in the US, but being a citizen had no bearing on my application, I still had to go through all the steps that other international nurses go through. I sent my application to Tasmania Board of Nursing on December 26, 2009 with all appropriate paperwork, on this same day I mailed a request to my school for transcripts and the BON for license verification to be sent over to Australia. On January 18, 2010 I took the IELTS test, did not review anything for this test and scored ok. On February 15th, 2010 I checked the public register for Tasmania via their website and my name was listed as an RN with no limitations. I really was surprised how quick this all happened.
Good luck to others out working through the same process.

Congrats! Are you a dual citizen? Do you mind me asking why you did your nursing degree in the US?
Yes I am a dual citizen. NY just happened to be where I was living at the time I was ready to start on my nursing career, no other reason for choosing the US over Oz. I am looking forward to eventually nursing in Australia though :)
I think it's a smart idea - it's much easier to work in Aus with a US degree than it is to work in the US with an Aus degree!

Hello nyaussie, I'm contemplating moving to Australia as well. Is there any way I can contact you? There seems to be no private message button, or am I just blind? The speedy processing you went through is impressive.

Thanks for posting this. I too am a dual citizen (US & NZ). I have considered spending some time nursing in Australia and / or New Zealand. I didn't know if I could get a license with my US ADN training.
@ nyaussie or whoever may know the answer.
Do Filipino grads go a different route than US grads? I'm talking about the conversation in this thread: https://allnurses.com/international-nursing/newly-grad-filipino-287930.html. I haven't finished reading it yet (I'm on pg 3) but it seems like they require a bridging program to go to Aus. Does that require exist for US grads as well?
Thanks.

From what I have learned is that graduates of US nursing do not get bridging. And yes, Filipino grads go through a different route than US grads.

Hello there Nyaussie. I am currently completing my associate RN degree here in the USA. I am very interested in getting details on what will need to be done to transfer my License from the USA to Australia when completed... This is a new confusing experience for me. I would love to chat with you more about this if you have the time. Thank you for posting the above info. It has given me a start! :)
