It should be, unless you have some type of infection. Also once it navigates the urethra it may pick up bacteria or upon exiting the body.

It is, unless you have an infection. In which case, it is not.

Alexis,
Urine is created by filtration of sterile blood through the kidneys. So, the substances within the blood that is filtered would also be sterile. So, unless there's an infection in the bladder that contaminates the urine as it passes through, urine should be considered sterile.
Someone correct me if I'm off base here.

Yes, it is sterile in the bladder, barring infection. Our bladders are a sterile environment. When the urine comes out it probably isn't sterile anymore because of bacteria at the entrance to the urethra and on our skin, thats why you have to use that cloth at the Dr.'s office to get a "clean catch" specimen. It is probably still not sterile, to be sterile is a complete absence of pathogens and it only takes one to defeat that!

...to be sterile is a complete absence of pathogens ...
Since this is a student forum and since I'm a stickler regarding terminology, I'd like to point out that sterility is the absence of any living organism not just pathogens.

You are correct, I didn't go broadly enough with that point, did I !?
