URGENT: Apply as transfer without pre-reqs

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I am new to AllNurses. I'm so grateful to find out about this website, especially during this difficult situation I'm in. It's causing a lot of stress and confusion. Before I get to my questions, I'll give a brief summary of my academic background. I am a high school graduate (class of 2011) with 31 semester units completed. I am currently taking 12 units this Fall so I will have 43 by the end of this year. I have most of my prerequisites (non-science) done (i.e. Sociology, Psychology, English, Nutrition, Speech, and Chemistry is in progress). I have to complete 17 more units to become an upperdivision student, as well as my science prereqs: Anatomy/Physiology 1&2 and Microbiology. I also have over 200 hours of community service (non healthcare related) in addition to a 5-month internship in the OR at a local community hospital. I currently have a 3.5 college GPA and am striving to raise that. I would like to transfer to a BSN program next Fall. With that in mind, I would like to turn to those of you who are more experienced to help answer my questions:

1) Am I eligible to apply to nursing programs for Fall 2012 even though my pre-requisites are not done at the time of application? If I can, then would my acceptance letter (if I get admitted) be conditional until I turn in my final grades? I will probably finish them by the end of Spring 2012 if I can get registered for the classes I need and pass them with high grades.

2) With my summary of my academic background, do I have a decent chance of getting into a BSN program? Most pre-nursing students I hear about have exceptionally higher grades and a much much better profile than myself...

3) What are some tips and suggestions you all can offer for my situation?

Thank you so much for your guys' time and help! I truly appreciate it. I apologize in advance if any of the same/similar questions have been answered on this website. I am new and have not yet explored all the discussions due to studying for my chemistry class. Thank you again!

These questions are best answered by academic advisors at the schools you are interested in.

I agree that an advisor would be your best source of information. That being said, I can share my experience. My pre-reqs must be finished by the start of the BSN program. Yes, acceptance is conditional on completion. At least 2 of the 4 sciences must be complete by the application deadline. Your chances of acceptance depend on the school you want to attend. My best advice is to get the best grades you can, keep building your volunteer resume, and take a breath. Nursing school is going to be tough; don't burn out before you get there!
