Urbana/ARMY LPN(a little long)

Published

I'm so new to this, so forgive me if I am asking questions that have already been asked or if I'm posting in the wrong area.

My reserve unit has offered to retrain me as a 91wM6(Army LPN). I want to know what civilian employers think of the Army's LPN education. Would you hire one? Has anyone in the Chicagoland OR Urbana area gone through this program? If so, how has it worked?

Also, IF I go to this program, when I come home, my husband will be half way through Law School at U of I(We live in Chicago now, we would move there and then move back here...or wherever they pay him the big bucks)

I already know that I wouldn't want to be an LPN forever, as I have read rumors that they will be phasing out, so I am curious about these bridge programs. Is driving to Danville to big of a stretch from Urbana? How were the ADN programs around that area?

Mostly, you guys are already what I want to be, an R.N....SO do you have any advice? Feel free to PM me or write back here! Thanks!

It is an hour's drive by interstate to Danville from Urbana. There is a good nursing school in Champaign, Parkland college. The program starts both fall and spring semesters, you do have to have good grades to get in. It would be alot closer for you.

Will you be eligible to sit for NCLEX-PN when you graduate from the army program? If so, then I don't see any reason not to pursue it.

Are there any LPN-RN bridge programs closer than Danville? What is offered in the Champaign area? What about the Bloomington-Normal area? That would be a little closer than Danville.

Good luck to you!

There may be some issues with you sitting for boards. You may have to call the BON and find out what their criteria for military trained nurses are. Also there is a bridge program in Decatur too which is also a little under an hour from Urbana to the west. Good luck,, hope you find what your looking for.

I completed the 91C course in sept 1995, the course itself was, at that time 6 weeks classroom at Fort Sam Houston and 1 year OJT at one of the armys MFT's (Madigan, Beaumont, Brook, Walter Reed, Womack etc.) I know the program has changed some to include what used to be the 91B Mos. If you take in to account the pre reqs you need for a civilian school, the application and selection process, The Army school is not much longer.

The experience you will gain in the army school is however unmatched, the things you will learn in the the 91W course, you wont learn at any civilian school.

OPPS and you will not have any issues with state boards, the army program is fully accredited.
