UPenn Second Degree/ABSN Fall 2016

Published

Hi Everyone!

I didn't see a thread for Penn's ABSN applicants and thought I would start one so we could connect. I received an email stating interviews for Second Degree applicants would occur between Nov. 16, 2015 and Jan. 29, 2016. Has anyone been contacted for an interview yet?

I am also worried about the steep cost of many of the programs I am interested in, especially since nursing will be my second bachelors degree. I have done some research and looked in past forums (and on reddit), and many have said that it wasn't worth it for them to accrue so much debt, but like @kaykay210 said, it depends what you are looking for.

I don't know about any special programs with the school, but HRSA has a program called Nurse Corps, which will pay for 60% of your unpaid loans after graduation if you work in a designated community after graduation. It seems like a great option, and I am sure there are many other scholarships out there as well!

Yeah going to ivy league schools are huge risk.

There is also the Nurse Corps scholarship where your tuition, books, living expenses will be paid along with getting a monthly stipend. As long as you are a nursing student and the requirements of being low income/not working will make you elegible along with not having a federal debt.

However, it is a steep price tag to pay. Especially considering that finding a job for a new nurse seems pretty easy, given the current nursing shortage. If you have an in state program that will allow you to pay less, just keep in mind their pass rates for the nclex. I would not want to pay any money at all for a program that will potentially not prepare you for your future role as a nurse.

Please stop perpetuating the rumor that there is a nursing shortage. There is absolutely no such shortage in Philadelphia, nor in many areas of the country. It is very hard as a new grad to get a job here. Many new grads end up in LTACs or SNFs, or wait months and months to get hired somewhere. There are too many schools in Philadelphia that have BSN programs for there to be a shortage. All of

That being said, I am currently attending Penn for the AGACNP program and I love being here. The program is difficult, but the faculty is amazing and the program is worth the $60k for the MSN.

I really can't necessarily speak for Philadelphia as that is not where I am from, but the nursing shortage is pretty well documented and studied as a statistical fact overall and not just rumors. That being said, for anyone starting a career, it can be difficult - nursing or otherwise. There are many credible sources that discuss it.

Hi all!

I interviewed a couple days ago and thought I would share some logistics.

Decisions should come out around Feb 10, and they are expecting a cohort of around 90 students. There are scholarships available to accelerated students through an application. It is a merit-based scholarship and is open to BSN second degree/MSN/PhD students. Other grants include a need-based one also awarded through the school.

Good luck everyone... only a couple weeks before we find out! :)

Ah me too! I hope we get it! Goodluck everyone!

Awesome! Thank you!

Hi, everyone! I also applied for the UPenn ABSN program for June 2016. I had an interview on Jan 19th. It lasted about 45 minutes, and it was very relaxed and casual! Filomena mentioned that 90 students would be accepted, and that it's about a 25-30% acceptance rate. Admission decisions will be available around Feb 10th. I was already accepted to DeSales University's ABSN program, but UPenn is my first choice, so I'm hoping that I'll hear back from them. Good luck to everyone!

Hi all,

I forgot to ask how we will be getting our admissions decisions during the interview. Will we be contacted via email or sent a link? Thanks!

This was posted on Penn Nursing's Facebook page today:

Penn Nursing stated, "People with chronic diseases clearly use more health-care services, and people who are older have more chronic disease,” said Julie Sochalski, an associate professor at Penn Nursing. The aging population and chronic disease are creating the perfect storm driving demand for nurses.”

Hi Bell427, I'm almost sure they will send us a link within an email that will take us to the admission decision. Only a few more days of waiting! eek!
