Update on Walden's post-master's certificate accreditation

Nursing Students NP Students

Updated:   Published

Hello Dear Ones, I am supposed to start Walden University post-masters NP Program on March 1st. Does anybody have any insight into their post-master's accreditation? I think CCNE had a visit there in October but there they still did not post any update...Do you think it is safe to start the program and it will get accredited eventually? Thank you

Thank you all. I don't qualify for Frontier post master's certificate program for PMHNP because they unfortunately offer that program only to APRNs :(. It is a great school though but my MSN is in nursing education.

I am really thinking about Herzing University's postmasters PMHNP certificate program as that one is approved my CA board of nursing and is accredited (unlike Walden's post masters certificates programs). What do you guys think? It is 24 months though which is longer than I was hoping for. Mental Clarity? Thank you so much.

I'll do some research for you! I haven't heard of any red flags though for Herzing.

You are very kind. Thank you. I just wish it was less than 24 months and no clinical hours for advanced physical assessment class because it is extra work to find preceptors for non--psych classes during pandemic but others have done it so it must be doable.

Much, much gratitude.

Agape, Herzing is what they call a "covert" for-profit. It's where the convert from for-profit to not-for-profit in order to avoid stigma but still funnel money into someone's pockets - in this case the Herzing family. That said, there have NO active investigations, I haven't seen any red flags from students posted online about poor education or misleading statements, and they do not have the stigma associated with them that Walden, Phoenix, etc do. In addition, the school states at this point that have severed ties with the Herzing family and are operating as a full not-for-profit, and I haven't see anything that contradicts this.

My assessment: I think it would be fine for now. Obviously proceed with caution as regulators are starting to crack down on both for profit and "covert" for profits but nothing is throwing up red flags at the moment. Good luck.

THANK YOU. You are very kind and caring Soul. I am grateful for your insight and help. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't know anything about Walden s criminal investigation and wasted my time and money there.

It looks like I will go with Herzing for now to do my 3Ps and then try to transfer to National University in July as their program is only 1 year and they are online and brick and mortar as well. I thank you from the depth of my heart and many blessings on your journey. Love, Jari Pohankova

Thank you so much. I had no idea that Walden was under investigation by the US Dept of Justice.

But you knew something was amiss.

A cheap and fast degree will haunt you  (no clinical hours practicing an advanced degree) and will bite you in the end when you are called upon to do something that is in the realm of your degree or come against a more learned colleague. Get a GOOD degree from a GOOD institution. Cheap and fast only works for fast food.

CCNE website: Walden is the best. I graduated with my NP, took both exams and passed both one month after graduation. I work in a busy clinic and very well prepared by my program. They are currently approved as of June 2021 till Dec 2030. See below:

Minneapolis—June 10, 2021—Walden University’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program has received a 10-year accreditation extension through December 31, 2030 by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an autonomous national accrediting agency that ensures that quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing.

“We’re extremely proud to have received the maximum 10-year CCNE accreditation extension for our MSN programs,” says Dr. Andrea Lindell, RN, ANEF, vice provost and dean of Walden's College of Nursing. “The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical importance of the nursing profession in ensuring the health and well-being of the global population. Our high-quality online programs are addressing the nursing shortage gap, while our nursing students and graduates are effecting positive social change through tackling healthcare inequities and instituting best practices in patient care.”

Walden graduates more nurses with advanced degrees than any other university, including being the largest conferrer of MSN degrees in the U.S., according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) IPEDS database. The nursing programs at Walden are designed to help students use evidence-based practice to enhance patient care and develop leadership skills.

@Agape practitioner wanted to follow up what you ended up choosing? I was also recently found out I didn’t qualify for frontier as my MSN is in nursing admin. I’m currently looking  into herzing, United States university and national university (since it’s closer to home)

I graduated at Walden University in 2021 and currently working in the best job of my life as an ARNP-BC in a busy clinic seeing 20 patients per day. Loving it and I am so thankful for my education at Walden. It is the best... They are CCNE and gave me the best education I could have asked for. I also took both boards and passed both on the first try. David D Dirgo ARNP-BC MSN RN CCM CPHQ.
