UPDATE on my battle with the GA LPN BON

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

I sent in my application, along with a nursing resume - that included my work history (19 years), my education including my CE's, all the states I've been licensed in (currently active in Ohio), a copy of the nursys report and a letter outlining everything. I also sent an additional packet requesting approval for a distance learning program with a side by side comparison and a list of why the program would work for me.

Both packets were sent by certified mail and were recieved today at 9:44AM. We'll see how long it takes to hear from them.

I also called the Prez of the LPN Board to let her know all had arrived and asked her help to "hurry it along" due to my dire financial situation, I told her - I could be taking the therory portion right now (online). The BON only meets 6 times a year and sometimes they will meet via phone on the off months - January being an off month. She also told me they really have nothing on the agenda right now, so it could be the middle of February before I even hear anything .

I also called my State Representative to give him an update and complain about the antiquated system - lets move into the current century - no one on the board or any of the staff even have email:eek::banghead:. I think they communicate via string and paper cup :icon_roll.

So everyone keep their fingers, toes and anything else crossed that this moves through rapidly, I will still face several months of refresher, but I'd at least like to get started:cool:.

I was thinking about you today. ANy good news? About anything?

Other states except the fact that I recently passed the NCLEX-PN an would allow me to work as a new applicant and not require additional refresher. Thanks for your help.

Move if you can Melvin, your life as an LPN will go much better if you do, once you've got solid experience you could move back without the hassle. Call around to a few states and see what they require - Good luck.

Sue, I sent you an email:D

Moving is not an option right now. I guess I'll have to continue the battle.

Yikes. I was thinking of moving to Georgia but it's evident that it would be a big mistake. Good luck to you!

It's not a problem if you are currently working as a LPN or RN. If I return to california and work of 300 hours they would approve my license.

wow, just read all 6 pages...last post 6 weeks ago...so, any resolution? (I hope so).

i've given up trying to meet georgia's board of nursing's requirement. i have contacted all the facilities the board has posted on their website; none offers a program that meets the states requirements. one facility expressed the same frustration i have encountered with the board. i've decided to seek employment with the federal government and have applied for licensure in neighboring states. so far it looks promising. i was told by the georgia board (verbally not in writing) once i achieve 300 hours of work experience i will be eligible to reapply for licensure by endorsement. my experience with georgia, once i achieve the 300 hours the rules will change again.

Good luck, hope the op's gotten some good news...at last. :)

No, no resolution at this time. They didn't approve my refresher program, but approved me to take one:banghead: go figure. I live in NE GA and there are NO programs within a 50 mile radius, the only 3 on their list are Columbus, Savannah or Ackworth - all well over a 3+ hour commute one way AND they only offer them once or twice a year if at all, they had one listed in Union City but they no longer are active. I have run out of unemployment benefits so financially it's impossible at this time. The GA LPN BON has made it next to impossible for me to get a refresher course at this time due to a lack of funding and additional roadblocks - oh and there is no state or federal funding for nurse refresher courses btw:mad:. There are many other road blocks they've put up but I won't even bother going into them at this time as it's a moot point unless something happens.

I did complete a Phlebotomy course and pass the national exam with a 90%:thankya: and some of the questions were toughies and you had to use GASP those evil "critical thinking skills" that LPN's aren't supposed to have:icon_roll. BUTTTT it seems even those jobs have dried up in my area:mad:. I had hoped to get on at a hospital in my area as a Phlebotomist and still hope to. I've just completed my CE's for my Ohio license renewal due in August, for any of you that don't know LPN's don't really have CE's "just for us" with few exceptions so all of my CE's were for RN's. I will continue to maintain my license in Ohio and hope to get a CPT job here somewhere, until I can sell my property in NE GA.

BTW, for anyone interested I have 10 acres of mixed hardwoods and pasture with a 10 year old MH for $140,000. It's near Gainesville, Athens, Winder, Commerce and North Gwinnett Co. All of them have hospitals and ALL of them are hiring, there are also LTC's and Doc in the Boxes and Clinics etc. Sooooo if yah gotta license and wanna move to the country contact me:D.

Have you considered working with the Veterans Administration (you can work anywere with an Ohio license).
