Hello everyone,
I am a recent nurse graduate in NYC. I have been looking for a job for about 3 months now with no success. I would like to work in a hospital but so far I have been either getting rejected or still waiting for an application status update. There are some job openings in clinics for new grads which I am considering. I am also considering working in a LTC facility but I am afraid I won't be able to survive that long and will be too stressed. By working in a clinic, I don't want to hinder my chances of getting a hospital job. Does anyone have any advice about what path I should take or job experience they can share?
Thanks

NYC is a competitive job market for new grads. 3 months is actually not that long. However, you would be wise to expand your job hunt outside the hospital. Nursing experience somewhere beats no nursing experience because you hold out for a hospital job that might not happen. You could also look into relocating or taking a longer commute to an area not so impacted.

Most nursing students/new grads see themselves in acute care, but there is not room for everyone in every region. I recommend pursuing either clinic or SNF work if you aren't willing to relocate.

sounds like a saturated market , same as PA...new grads getting churned out, even BSN prepared, and they are out of work a whole year after graduation. Any experience better than none, and hopefully you do not wind up being an unpaid intern for a year...like a nearby hospital is currently doing to people because the job market is so dry, they get away with it.

I've only been job hunting for a week and I'm already frustrated so I can imagine how you feel after 3 months. I've only been called from agencies that want me to work in nursing homes. I'm probably going to end up taking a nursing home position and continue to look for a hospital job. I need to make money in the meantime so sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do!

NYC is well known to be a very saturated job market for new grad nurses. Do you have a BSN? If not, you will not be considered in that market. They are not hiring ASNs in NYC for acute care anymore, from what I have heard. I have also heard that even with a BSN it is difficult to get a position in NYC without an inside reference. There are just a lot more new grads than there are new grad positions.
Expand your search outside of acute care and outside of NYC. Best of luck.
