Anyone know ANYTHING about the UNR nursing school?? just ANY & ALL input or feedback would be appreciated! thanks

I started Fall of 2006 and graduated December of 2007.

I enjoyed my time there - of course there were bumps along the way, but it was a good program and the instructors are interested in your success. If you do what you're asked, you'll do fine. I think we had one student who voluntarily quit and another that didn't show up to a final and failed a course. Other than that, 46 of 48 that started finished.

Just in case anyone else reads this. The minimum cut off for UNR this time was 3.73. It's crazy! I didn't get in this time, but I'm reapplying with (I hope) a 3.75 for the Fall.

someday RN---Sorry to hear that! Good Luck!!!

Reno-How much did you have to study? Do you think the UNR program is less rigorous than TMCC? Were you able to get any nursing school specific financial aid? What was the best thing & worst thing about the nursing program? Do you like how the program goes through summer? How did that work with aid? Did you have to pay out of pocket for summer?? Thanks!!

You have to study a lot - you take a full load of courses, anywhere from 12-17 credits per semester, if I remember right.

There are some that will say TMCC is more rigorous, but I have never been given any examples. The only thing I can say is that TMCC seemed to be more aggressive with weeding out "bad" students. I felt like I received a fine education, I passed the NCLEX-RN on my first try with 75 questions, and I've been working as a successful RN since. I got what I wanted out of it: RN Licensure & Employment.

UNR financial aid does a special funding cycle for Nursing students since the nursing major requires enrollment in the summertime. I liked that it went through the Summer. You're done in 16 months. From start to finish, I completed my BSN in 3.5 years. You still get a week off for Spring Break...I think there's a week between Summer and Fall, and you still get the longer (about a month) Winter Break, so it's not bad.

I am applying to the UNR program in Fall for the Spring 2011 start date. The program is supposed to be really good and somewhat accelerated as you go through the Summer. It is 4 semesters - one 15units, two 17units, three 13units and finally four with 12units.

The classes that count toward your GPA are:

core math

chem 121

chem 220

bio 223

bio 224

bio 251

hdfs 201

communications

nutr 223

nurs 300 (has to be taken at UNR)

BSE class

you also have to take

eng 101 and 102

ch 201 202 and 203

psy/ant/soc or wmst 101

fine arts (3units)

diversity (3units)

greneral capstone (3 units -upper division class)

and

Statistics

the second list you have to get a C or better.

Also, you can have up to 13 units in progress when applying, only one class of which can be a science class. These classes that are in progress will not count toward your GPA as you will be accepted or declined before completing them. You therefore, have to get a C or better in any classes that are in progress. (So I will be taking Chem 220 the semester I am applying as I hate this chem!)

The way my grades stand now and if I get an A in all classes I have scheduled for the next few semesters (including summer) I will have a 3.75 when I apply, however, if I retake Communications and get an A instead of a B I can raise my GPA to a 3.8ish (I think a little higher). I am not sure if I should retake this class or stick with the 3.75. It has been so competitive lately, that I feel like I don't want to risk not getting in with a 3.75... but at the same time feel like that should definitely be high enough to get me in - any advice?

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

I too am now shooting for the UNR program (& TMCC too) If you have time & money to retake the Com then I would highly rec. It! I heard this fall applications for spring were mostly 3.8's, buuuuut they dis take in a 3.73. The thing is, lately each semester it seems the lowest GPA gets higher & higher. In the past they could take in 3.65...I doubt they will take that in anytime soon. Also, A lady explained at info session that may go out to ".001" of a point!!! Anyway, good luck!!!

I took non-verbal communication for my COM class. It was an easy A.

i have been in school for a while with many units and have finally decided on nursing...but my gpa is not the best....about an overall 3.2. what are my chances? how long do you think it will take me to get in at UNR? i live in sacramento, ca and the nursing schools here are insanely competitive. any info is appreciated. thanks!

Depending on which classes you have to (re)take, it can take about 3-4 semesters. There are 37 credits that taken into consideration for the UNR program - prerequisites are listed here: OSN Forms.

Orvis used to be easier to get into, but it is getting more and more competitive every semester. The minimum admitting GPA this time was 3.73. I would shoot for as high of GPA as possible.

Best of luck to you!

According to the link above, UNR will be increasing the number of students entering the nursing program. I'm hoping this means they will begin to consider those who have 3.5ish GPA'S. Does anyone know of the latest news regarding the new building that will open in Fall 2011 to accomodate more Nursing and Med students. Does anyone know if the new Health Science building will really be opened next Fall ?

I'd like to know about the building, too. I imagine they will need educators in order to allow more students. I think the lack of nursing educators is why nursing programs only accept a few students to begin with, so I wonder how long it would be. I hope they expand the program soon! I would LOVE to go to UNR's program! I am looking at a 2012 enrollment though.... (So I have time to wait)

Side question: on average how many hours (a day) does a UNR nursing student spend on study?
