University of Southern Nevada

U.S.A. Nevada

Hi,

I'm new here and was reading up on USN, just out of curiosity, has anyone ever been denied of acceptance to USN? Do they usually accept all students? Any info is greatly appreciated.

What is annoying about the strip ... #1 is the traffic. Don't go near the strip unless you have to. We got off at Tropicana and parked at NYNY which is right there at the exit and my husband was like "well that is as far as I ever want to drive on the strip to have to park to go to the strip".

Las Vegas is a sprawling western city. Subdivisions and shopping centers abound. I have been here only 6 weeks so I can't give a full review but sprawling is a very good word for it. The school district has as many students as the entire city of Albuquerque had when I first moved there in 1992. It kind of reminds me of a much much bigger Albuquerque, but the culture is definitely different.

I have lived in Vegas for 6 years, so I can provide a pretty well rounded review. Ditto on the strip traffic. You will also get tired of the drunk tourists. I understand that is the reason why we're all living here, but it is annoying nonetheless.

Vegas is physically spread out and I think the population hovers somewhere around 2 million. It's not like a major metro area where everyone takes public transportation -- a car is pretty much a necessity.

Please don't forget that Nevada has been hit very hard by the recession, Las Vegas in particular. I believe we have one of the highest (if not *the* highest) unemployment and foreclosure rates in the country. They built too soon too fast and you will see many new shopping centers that don't have any stores in them. I just purchased a home from a couple that only bought it themselves 1 year ago. I paid $20k *less* than they did, which shows how quickly and dramatically home prices have dropped.

The "culture" (if you want to call it that) is gambling, drinking, clubbing, etc. I have been to the symphony at UNLV one time, and it was just OK. We are just getting some opera and the idea of "theatre" is Criss Angel or Blue Man Group. We do have some fantastic restaurants here, but unfortunately you have to go to the strip for the "big name" chefs. We are really big foodies and in particular are fans of Picasso in the Bellagio, Fleur de Lys inside of Mandalay Bay, Guy Savoy in Caesar's Palace, and L'Atelier Joel Robuchon in the MGM Grand. There are also far more affordable and delicious options off the strip too.

Thanks for more info! Its all coming into perspective. That's good to know as I anticipate my trip. Would you like to hang out one of the days/nights I'm there (I know you said you hate the strip). I am totally going by myself and I don't know what expect being a girl in vegas alone! Haha

Thank you for all the good information. One more question... I'm checking out apartments, condos and small homes for rent. Any idea of average electric bill? Say for a 1 bedroom>

@ Inspiration: How old are you?

@ Cancer: Not much -- definitely more in the summer since you will be running the A/C 24/7. I used to live in a 3 bedroom apartment and I think our high during the summer was like $250 or something like that.

Hey Cupcake, I'm 21...about to be 22. You?

Oh, well I see it says 27, right?

I consider myself a bit of a foodie, as well, though certainly never a big name foodie. I'm into Thai, Japanese, Viet Namese and occasionally Filipino food. My favorite restaurant is Archi's Thai Bistro at 215 and Rainbow. I've never had better steak than Binion's Ranch Steakhouse, downtown. I'm comfortable without A/C any day the temp is 100F and lower, YMMV. Typically I have considerably much lower electric bills than anyone I know. A year and a half ago, I bought a Henderson home for 46% of what it had sold for two years prior. That home I'm renting out and I'm living in Boulder City.

My husband went to Town Square the other night and liked The Yard House (I think that is what it was called). So there are places off the strip that are fun. Town Square looks like a nice place to go hang out.

Thanks! Ill check it out. I haven't heard of it before, but I def have ample time to go check it out.

For those of you needing "Nevada Constitution:" I just noticed UNLV's PSC 100-Section 1002 is open. The class meets Saturday, September 25 all day & Saturday, October 2 half day.

That is the whole class? I'm going to have to look at UNLVs schedule.

I am likely still going to need NV constitution for my alternate plan and I was just going to take it at CSN distance ed next term. Would have taken it this term but for goodness sakes, they are taking forever to evaluate my transfer credit and I could not register without transfer credit for Eng 101.

That is an interesting format. I assume you have to write a paper and turn it in by a certain date after the weekend class sessions?
